Shufflin' Off To Buffalo

Watching the sun come up over the Mekong this morning, throwing biscuits to the dogs, a mug of instant java and Norton Buffalo on th' Victrola. Fine way to start the day. I bought Lovin' In Th' Valley O' Th' Moon' back in '77 or whenever on the strength of the cover - it's a masterpiece, but I can't find the artist among the lengthy credits at Discogs.

If you were around at the time, you'll recognize the blissed-out, shimmering sound. It sits happily with Nesmith's Radio Engine, Cocker's Luxury ... touch of reggae, touch of the Bahamas. Not that Buffalo can sing like either, but he out-harps just about everybody.

Fast forward to 2000. King O' Th' Highway showcases the bar band of your dreams. The stripped down hot-rod sound makes the perfect soundtrack for panic-buying alcohol!

(Art n' Design Note: They made two attempts at incorporating the swell cover painting, failing twice)

Phillip Jackson (for it is he) crammed a shitload of swell music into his skinny fifty-eight years, and is well worth a wiki dig. The great man shuffled off this mortal coil in 2009, in Paradise. Yeah!

  1. Mr. Buffalo also was instrumental in the formation of Shiva Burlesque, a wonderful short lived band that morphed into the Ophelias, a band I was in. I wonder where the stealth technology shall turn up. I just polished off all the Corona in the House O Foam minibar and replaced it with San Miguel Dark.

    1. Shiva Burlesque? Really? I had their albums. Didn't they morph into Grant Lee Buffalo?

    2. Grant Lee Buffalo - now you have my attention. Didn't Buffalo also record a few with Roy Rogers (not the cowboy, but the great slide guitarist)?

    3. I can't be arsed to go back to the wiki page, pmac, but I guess it's a shoo-in. He recorded with just about everybody, most famously the Steve Miller Band.

    4. Looks that way Farq. I was there so, of course, it's a bit hazy. See the China White chapter of my autoB....lol.

    5. I want in on this party -- I used to see a punk band called China White at the Dancing Waters club in San Pedro; does that count?!?!

  2. Norton Buffalo was also the founder member of Buffalo Springfield, which morphed into Grant Lee Buffalo Springfield. Which was later headed by reggae personality Eddy Grant, becoming Eddy Grant Lee Buffalo Springfield.

    2. Only briefly, as that line-up led nowhere. However, when crooner Nelson Eddy joined, Willie Nelson did too, before Wet Willie completed the long-running line-up that still gigs today!

Wet Willie Nelson Eddy Grant Lee Buffalo Springfield

(There are rumors that obscure country-pop-rock band Springfield Rifle are keen to tag along).

Badly-Drawn Boy George Michael Jackson Brownsville Station may be touring with them.

    1. Bob, your exquisite manners serve as an aspirational beacon for the lowlife grifters and soup kitchen bums who hang out here. How refreshing it is to see that some of us still have courtliness and gentility out th' ass. By way of showing my appreciation, your link is positioned right at the end of this sentence, in the full point

  6. Grant Lee Buffalo made some good records, notably for me the second album. Grant Lee then started me thinking about Lee Grant, fabulous looking woman. My favourite Columbo episode.....hang on a minute...what happened to Columbo? Mysteriously disappeared. hmmm, suspicious that, Mr T.

  9. Thanks for the N. Buffalo. Always a favorite. The cover artist is Richard Kriegler. (Me neither.) I had to get out my vinyl copy and a magnifying glass but there it is: "Illustration and Graphics: RICHARD KRIEGLER."
