Van Dyke Parks On The Driveway

And drives on the parkway. That's the kind of guy he is. I had email communication with the great man, briefly, back when. Someone had passed him a pastiche of his lyrics what I done wrote, convinced it was his work. VDP thought it might have been a forgotten lyric by him until I 'fessed up. Ain't I a rascal? I'd like to say we became great pen pals and still exchange Christmas cards, but I'm sure he forgot all about it instantly.

Anyway - here's a cute couple of peripheral albums of his I scooped out of an internet and can't remember anything about. What I'm asking of you, Dear Reader, is if you have his soundtrack score for Th' Two Jakes, I'd love to have a copy. I did myself, but lost it in the freak internet storm which swept my entire mp3 collection up into the Van Allen Belt. Goshdarnit.

    2. That would be swell, pmac. Tx, as they text.

    3. My buddy doesn't have it, but he'll see if he can get a copy from VDP himself. VDP curated my friend's "greatest hits" album (more like an overview of his career as a jazz pianist).

    4. Tell your buddy it's for the guy who wrote "adobe, a-do". That'll confuse him.

    5. Lol! Look up Tom McDermott. Has several albums to his credit. Bamboula is the album curated by VDP.

  4. Thanks for the VDP. Made my week. I'd love to see more. His Orange Crate Art collaboration with Brian Wilson was fantastic.

    1. House Marsupial JJWombat comes up with todays Valuable Bonus Links. Wasn't aware of Kenton Nelson - he owes a debt to Edward Hopper, doesn't he?

  6. I have an album by Van Dyke Parks called Tokyo Rose, bought many years ago because, well, Van Dyke Parks. Played rarely since but listening now and don't know what to think. Do I like it? Dunno - someone tell me what to think.
Singers include Arnold McCuller, Syd Straw, Bobby King and Willie Greene so it must be good, mustn't it?
    Cheers, Peanuts Molloy.

    1. I had it. It's not Song Cycle, but what is? That's an album that just keeps on giving. I never, ever get tired of it. Totally magical - everything that Smile could have been, in a universe free of Mike Love.

    2. VDP & Tokyo Rose? Yeah, it won me over. When the disc stopped spinning I put it on again.
Mike Love? Well, what to think: did he co-write Good Vibrations, Do It Again and I Get Around? If so, he deserves a pass on all else . . . or does he? He's a bit of an arse apparently but, but, but he co-write Good Vibrations, Do It Again and I Get Around! And he speaks well of you and me.
      Cheers, Peanuts Molloy.

  7. I have the Wild Bill / Two Jakes on CD. I'd be happy to send you a burn if you've got an address I can send it to...

    1. That's a great offer, but a burn is no use to me - I don't have a CD player. If you could somehow upload it? Upspeaking?

  8. Not sure how to do that. I can upload it to my i-tunes but then what?

    1. If you haven't done this before, it's possibly a little daunting, and I wouldn't want you to go to the trouble - thanks again for your offer, though - much appreciated.

  9. Why not have the CD-R sent to an un-DISCO-closed loco-cation...?

Oh, and, I bet any numba of the Fahq-heads here would even have spare CD players they could drop-zone yer way...!

Just an idea. . . Or too . . Much...?

    1. Thanks anyway, BB! I really don't want a CD player - they're dirt cheap out here, mainly because nobody knows what a CD is any more. The mp3 has been the music carrier of choice in Siam for a long time, if streaming isn't an option.

    2. Interesting, whereabouts are you located in Siam if I may inquire?
      Thanks for VDP btw.

    4. Well if I have to believe the latest updates about the dams in China & Laos flooding is going to be something of the past...
I'm based in Nonthaburi, in late 2011 the water was over a meter high in our mooban for 2 months...
But the terrible air quality will kill us all before the next massive flooding anyway!

    5. It must be some compensation for you to know that air quality out here on the perimeter is Swiss Alp standard. In fact, we're exporting it to Switzerland, such is its purity.

      Delete
    6. Ha, ha, ha, I admire your imagination! If that were only true...

    7. Air quality here is fine. No industry, no traffic, no fires. Not so sure about Switzerland, though.

    8. Amazing! My friends in Chiang Mai & Rai aren't so lucky.
      Screw the Swiss ;-)

    9. Chiang Mai has always had a problem with smoke from crop burning settling into a geographical bowl (hey - this must be fascinating stuff for the three or four other guys). Long time since I was in either. But here - Nakhon Phanom province - the air is good.

  10. Okay, but let me know if you can't get it elsewhere. I may not know how to upload a CD, but I know you do...

  12. I love VDP's "Jump!". Lyrics by "Fred Martin", one tune nicked from Chopin, accompanying children's book, wonderful guest vocals.
