Rachel Maddow's Secret Passion Revealed!

TV's sultry, pouting Rachel Maddow is justly notorious for her shock-jock potty-mouthed Buns Out For Rachel show, where she gets her fingers in the batter of A-list celebrities such as Pia Zadora and Cher as they show off their skills with rolling-pin and piping bag. But few of her fans know of her secret passion for - no, not that, everyone knows about that - the steel guitar.

Yes! Nothing clouds her lovely eye quicker than the lonesome sound of the steel guitar! At a recent visit to Th' House O'Foam©, she pounced on my vinyl copy of Red Rhodes' Velvet Hammer In A Cowboy Band.

RM: Hot diggety dog! Excuse my language! I thought I had the only copy of this! Well, pinch my bustle and call me Betsy! Oh dear! Sorry for the profanity, Farq, but ... holler me up a hog if this ain't a regular barrel o'biscuits!
FMF©: Ixnay on the profatinay, Rache, we get dames in here. It sure is a swell album, ain't it though?
RM: Yeppers! Whoops -there I go again!
FMF©: It's like a Nesmith album without the vocals. He produced it for his Countryside label, which never did much of anything else, apart from all the other fine album. Seen this?
[bends to shelf, revealing builder's butt-crack, extracts album]
RM: Well it's hayrides to horse pucky it's that supergroup steel album Nes put out on his Pacific Arts label!
FMF©: Right. You. Outside. I told you about the language already already. We run a hi-toned establishment here.
RM: Can I just meet Cody? I got her-
FMF©: OUT!
[FX: FIST BLOWS, GRUNTS OF PAIN etc]

  3. FGW turns off The Fall song "It's A Curse" on his tinny, not tiny, tinny, Webcor stereo and elicits the most plaintive wistful sighs from his chorus of singing tea cup chihuahuas. They are. one and all, former dog racing champions from Mexico where they are ridden hard and put up wet (much like Rachel herself) by 300 pound Mexican jockeys with full western saddles. They blissfully sing "Oh may we please be bequeathed the most amazing LP produced by the man with wool on his head? He's not to be confused with the one lying in state whose breath must now smell like bait 'neath the Kremlin dome. He's not in his home.................(smack of flying shoe)..........much kiyiking and howling.......soft whimpers.........What's a guy gotta do around here to get this elusive slice of licorice pizza anyway, beg? Happy new year Mr. Throckmorton!

  4. Dear Mr. Throckmorton III;

    I do believe, as they saying goes, you've knocked one out of the park. Mr Rhodes is an outstanding player who has been the real key to a certain Mr. Nesmith's success. Thank you for sharing, as always your generosity is deeply appreciated.

    PS: How is the delightful Cody?

    1. I really regret trashing a couple of his earliest, pre-Nes albums. Too plain for me at the time, but I want 'em back. If any of the 4or5 guys has any more, please don't be backward in coming forward. It'd be swell to have a kind of thread devoted to him.

      Cody says hi, by the way. I think that's what she says. Difficult to tell sometimes.

  5. Happy New Year Mr F, if it's possible what with everything that's going on both sides of the pond (easy to slip into a slough of despond) but I won't go into all that...er, what was I going to go ionto??.....oh yes Red Rhodes. Great player. He's also responsible for one track on the sister LP Suite Steel, which features many of the same players. There are also a number of other 'solo' albums including a live one, LIVE AT THE PALOMINO, a couple available on youtube (at least I think that's where I found them) GUITARS GO COUNTRY and STEEL GUITAR FAVOURITES. I also have LPs entitled ONCE A DAY, BLUE BLUE DAY and STEEL GUITAR RAG. I think they mostly predate his association with Papa Nez.

    1. Let me know if you want any of them. I can pop them in an e-mail or several (but not the youtube ones as they are in just one v. large file.) I've got a number of Buddy Emmons' too, not to mention J D Maness, Lloyd Green and Tom Brumley. (NB only music, no artwork, I'm afraid)

  6. I was hoping you'd ask Mr Maddow about that Steele dossier, but, once she started in on Cody, I understand your tossin her out on her ear.

    1. The "Steele dossier" was only ever called that by the media. It's an intelligence report, which is to say, "this is what we're hearing from our trusted sources". Steele wasn't in the business of preparing factual dossiers backed up by evidence, that's not how intelligence works. He has his sources, trusted over years of building up his stainless reputation in the business, and he was worried enough to take it to the highest levels he could. But he never said "this is what happened", because that's not his business. "This is what we're hearing" is as far as the intelligence remit took him. It was his sources - his assets - that made it intelligence rather than gossip. This distinction is altogether too subtle for the binary minds of the media. I wouldn't be at all surprised if most of it happened more or less as described. And although I don't believe that pine air fresheners are the work of the Illuminati, I do believe that Trump has kompromat against Lindsey Buckingham (whoops! Graham).

  7. I'm pretty sure you have your TV "Rachel"s confused. I was surprised you didn't comment on her famous hairstyle from yesteryear.

    All of which is to say: I wouldn't mind fingering Pia Zadora's batter myself.

  8. Dear Mr. Throckmorton III;

    Since you have shown such exquisite taste in performers on the steel guitar, I thought you may like the following album.

    Buddy Emmons - Steel Guitar

    This album features a stunning version of Johann Pachelbel's Canon In D Major. I do so hope you enjoy it.

  9. Boy Howdy! That Ms. Maddow certainly does have a potty mouth but it's comforting to know that all her book learnin' doesn't stop her from stompin' at the local hoedown when she's not rollin', pipin' and fingerin' with her a-list celebs (and almost Cody as well!). Thanks for yet another soundtrack to a behind-the-scenes peek at the Th' House O'Foam©

    1. Ms Maddow is an almost priceless media resource these days. I only wish she'd be a little less aware of that, a little less "A block, C block" and a whole lot more righteous fury, strangely absent in a USA mostly happy with the occasional philosophical shrug. Probably a millennial thing. Rock-throwing in the streets is so inappropriate ... so problematic ... don'cha think?
