Rick Wrap

In Concert was the debut of the Stone Canyon Band (named after the Sherman Oaks address where they rehearsed), wayyyyyyy back at the tail end of the 'sixties, coming between Perspective and Rick Sings Nelson. It must have surprised everyone when it charted healthily, nudging the top fifty, and it took a couple of albums before he'd better that with Garden Party. It's prime Rick, sounding perfectly in tune with his band and the times, with fan-pleasing nods to his past.

This should unpack in iTunes as two discs. Let me know if it doesn't behave. The cover shown here is the vinyl original, but the download is the massively-expanded CD re-issue.

Today's bonus is the 6-disc The American Dream set, which gathers all his teen idol recordings, throws in a bunch of rarities, and packages it in this mean, moody and magnificent cover. The downside is that it's at a bitrate lower than a snake's belly - @128 - and although it sounds fine to me you may have loftier audio standards.

It's really only Elvis I can follow back to those years, but there's no doubting the talent, skill, and taste on display here.

This post wraps up what I have to offer from Nelson - if you have more and feel generous, links will be welcome in the comments, as ever.

  7. The Rest Of Rick (aka The Scrapings Of The Barrel?) In early 1985 Rick re-recorded ALL MY BEST which was released as a double by Silver Eagle and then after Rick's death cut down as a single LP by MCA.
    https://pixeldrain.com/u/ji9hsHHG. Tracks 1 - 23 are from these sessions.
Rick then began recording an album of new stuff for MCA/Curb, which was never completed, the last session being just 5 days before the plane crash. 24 - 26 are from these sessions (though 26 could be Las Vegas 79, details are vague). The rest are more SCB odds and ends. There are live albums from 74, 77 and 83/5. If anyone is desperate to hear those.........

    2. Those remakes are not bad, but also...not super necessary. But thanks, anyway!

How is the 74 one? Is that still the SCB (or "Canyon" at that point) playing?

    3. https://workupload.com/file/xyaCpZEwjRR. This is the 74 SCB, quite a varied setlist. Released as part of the 3rd Bear Family box set (which I plundered rather than purchased). The 77 & 79 sets are technically still SCB, Tom Brumley is present and John Beland, but the songs are much more early Rick oriented, so too the 83/5 set with his last band, who died with him. Agreed, All My Best is just for completist nerds like me.

    4. Yeah, I figured. Post 1976 or so Nelson really started to lean more into the "oldies but goodies" direction.

Yeah, I was just interested to check All my Best. But since it's literally the same songs in the same arrangements, except with an older Rick (voice is still fine), well, it's probably wiser to just keep the originals. Curiosity satisfied.

SCB looks really good, set list-wise.
