I never knew a girl who liked "difficult" rock music. Maybe you do, seeing as how popular you are with the ladies! But as far as I'm aware, they have something better to do - like each other - than furrow their pretty little brows over troublesome time signatures, knuckle-knotting fretboard displays, and wilfully ignoring the time-honored format of the popular song. But there are times I think they might be missing out, and here's three compelling reasons why.
Aorta seemed hell-bent on avoiding selling records. That name, for starters. That cover, for seconders. Nothing conceptually wrong with either - the cover is as beautifully designed as an image of internal organs can be. Ahead-of-its-time typography, too. But it would hardly leap off the racks into your hand as an impulse purchase back in '69, unless you were a troubled loner type living in your mom's crawl space. Hey! Who hasn't done that when times were hard?
Michael Been - you'd know who he was if you'd been paying attention, you simpering jackanapes - joined for the second album, which was more girl-centric in content and packaging, but it was too little, or too much, too late, or too early, or something, and the band split like a pair of cheap pants. Been moved through the ranks of HP Lovecraft and Moby Grape before starting his own band The Call, who have a swell new retrospective out you should hear.
Graffiti have one of the hardest names to spell in the history of rock, pop n' roll. One f or two? Two t's or one? At least the album wasn't produced by Bill Szyzcmic. Zsyzmcx. They make up for that by only listing their first names on the album - kudos to Steve, Richie, George, Tony, and Jon!
These are terrific albums, displaying great musicianship, harmony singing, and a willingness to experiment. This is prog before the fun got sucked out of it, from that thrilling end-of-the-sixties period when big labels took risks and weren't afraid to fuck with the formula. Play them for your best gal, and let us know how you make out!
ReplyDeleteOne for th' laydeez!
Thank you Farquhar. Been a fan of Been for quite a while. Looking forward to hearing how he used to Been...Indeed. You sir, have a grand blog, thanks.
ReplyDeleteONWARD thru the Fog!
I'm listening to The Call collection right now, catching up with you, Mumbles!
DeleteThey'd all been warned...and the walls came down...ONWARD thru the Fog!
ReplyDeleteThat second Aorta album sure tends to the righteous. There's another preachy platter in the Foam Archives below - The Alpha Band's eternally strange Statue Makers Of Hollywood.
DeleteThe Alpha Band...should I reply here about them or back at the original post? A little story perhaps?
ReplyDeleteOh, here, I think - saves us the walk down the hall.
DeleteSo being of the right age, but not quite, several guys (a crew, if you will) decided to settle just outside of Santa Fe in mid 1976. We resided in a small unpainted, unstuccoed, flat roofed cinder block 2 room building with running cold water, no water heater, a wood stove, and a spendid outhouse, that (with the door flung open) had a spectacular view of sunrise over the Sangres,(Rio en Medio.)
ReplyDeleteI digress, a few miles away was a bar called Shidoni which later became a bronze foundry/art gallery. Who was the house band that late summer/early autumn for 2 weeks?, you might ask. Well, it was none other than the aforementioned Alpha Band.
David Mansfield, Steven Soles, T-Bone Burnett (now well-known to most)and a semi familiar face, Matt Betton. Matt was from the next town over (back home), his family owned a local music shop.
Anyway fresh off the road from touring with Senor Zimmerman as part of Rolling Thunder, they plied their trade nightly and made for some pretty fantastic evenings of musical entertainment and comradery.
Then they were gone, like Kaiser Soze, headed west I suppose to boost their fortunes & fame. Hope you enjoyed a little bit of history or whatever.
ONWARD thru the Fog!
Gee, Mumbles, that's swell! I've added it to the body of the text [see Alpha Males - Ed.] so you can print it out and frame it!
DeleteFrame it, indeed. Muchas gracias Throckmorton 3 sticks.
ReplyDeleteIt won't be the first time you've yelled "I've been framed!" from a high, barred window.
DeleteAin't it the truth..also, probably not the last time. Hoping to listen to The Call Collected sometime soon. ONWARD thru the Fog!
ReplyDeleteBeen listening to The Call - Collected, this morning. What a fantastic release. Now I remember why I love this band. I've got to believe that they are/were seriously under rated. Kinda like Joe Grushecky & the House Rockers are under rated. Both are always solid, you know what to expect and what you're gonna get. They just deliver the goods constantly. YMMV ONWARD thru the Fog! Thanks
ReplyDeleteThe Call played a benefit at Kentucky State Pen, which I was lucky to attend, serving three of seven for a bum rap.
DeleteYou are a lucky felonist, indeed. ONWARD thru the Fog!
