The Secret Passion Of Sister Whiplash Dept.

Foam-O-Graph© - To DALL-E 2 what Webb is to Hubble!

You'll know comely ingenue Rholonne Déodoranté as th' IoF©'s Cosplay Religiousness Consultant Sister Whiplash, but did you know she's also Captain Beefheart's Only Girl Fan?! That's right, subscribers! If you see her with headphones over her snood, she's likely booglarizin' to th' Magic Band!

But which Beefheart song is doing her low yo-yo stuff today? The clews to the title are encypted in the above Foam-O-Graph© [above - Ed.]. I'll repeat that for those of you on drugs: THE ... CLEWS .... TO ... THE ... TITLE ... ARE ... ENCRYPTED ... IN ... THE ... ABOVE ... FOAM-O-GRAPH© [ABOVE - ED.].

If you think you're smart enough to have solved the puzzle [yeah, ri-ight - Ed.], leave a clew in the comments - don't name song directly!

Today's lucky prizewinners will be taking home not only a Limited Edition Legacy IoF© Adult Diaper Pack*, but these two swell long-playing record album L.P.s! Oh boy!

The Dust Blows Forward
is a stunning example of how to *cough* curate *cough* a retrospective compilation. A comprehensive career-long overview, it's the perfect introduction for the curious - it's fair to say if you still don't see what the fuss is about after this, you never will, ya schmuck. Even for the obsessive fan (such as je) there's a lot to savor - the best-ever take of Little Scratch, for one.

Out-takes
is its exact opposite - a missed opportunity. Given the profligate richness of material available on bootlegs, the compiler came up with a mean and puzzling grab-bag of bits and pieces, including an inferior take of Little Scratch (compare and contrast) and, astonishingly, no version of Funeral Hill. Nuts and fooey on the conehead who thought this was a swell idea.

* No-Leke™ Adult Diapers (100% recycled, 60% effective) provided by Milty's Intimate Collectibles, Pipetown, WY.

EDIT: Lick My Vocals Off, Baby (which is - and you may be well ahead of me here - the backing tracks for the Decals album, plus fragmentary vocal interjections) is a fabulous addition to the music enthusisast's record library! Yes, dear friends, this swell recording is yours absolutely free - just a dollar! - if you subscribe to our Body Cavity Research Program in a comment (offer valid where state laws permit).

  4. It's amazing how enthusiasm for entering this competition has tanked after the main prize has been snapped up.

Anyone seen Beefheart live? I saw him twice on the Clear Spot tour, and I was blown away - not by any "weirdness", but the awesome tightness and clarity of the band. I don't think I'd ever heard music that loud that sounded that good. They really were a Magic Band. The Captain forgot the words to Golden Birdies, and the audience helped him out, in joyous unison. He shook his head and laughed.

    1. Saw The Captain several times, and every time the music was tighter than two coats of paint.

    2. Could you paint some details, Babs? Years, venues, stuff like that? I have a pal - the lazy-ass Bendigo Wonglepong - who saw them in '65, when they were a blues/r n' b band.

    3. Saw The Captain in the early 70s in Boston at Boston University and Harvard University. In Manhattan at Ungano's Nightclub, Ritz Theatre, Max's Kansas City and maybe The Town Hall?. In Bristol, England, at the Colston Hall (where my husband and I were arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis).
1980, in Manhattan at Club 57 and The Mud Club (which I think was his last show here)

    4. They played Colston Hall (Bristol) in 72, 73, and 74 at least).

  5. To be fair to whoever compiled the outtakes album, it was part of a set of re-released albums and he probably had to compile whatever he was allowed access to that was left over from the album sessions. There seems no reason why it wasn't included, however. It's a stunning track.
Outtakes of Funeral Hill are available on Hoboism and the Brown Star Sessions.

    1. I'd be amazed if he didn't have access to everything the bootleggers have, and more. I have a shitload outtakes from those sessions (maybe some duplicates, haven't checked). This was an opportunity to do something spectacular (box sets have been compiled from flimsier material), and we finished up with something gestural. From beefheart, com:

"Fourteen tracks lasting 46 minutes 41 seconds, enough for a well filled vinyl album. That seems rather paltry … and there were no extra tracks on the CD version. Why do I think it’s paltry? Well, as most fans will know there are at least five or six CDs worth of outtakes from this period that could have been used and that’s well over 70 odd tracks (if you include backing tracks)! Where is the delightful ‘Well Well Well’ sung by Rockette Morton, the long slow version of ‘Circumstances’, the early instrumental of ‘Clear Spot’ and the fully-formed atmospheric ‘Funeral Hill’ to name a few? And, of course, the alternate versions of ‘Sun Zoom Spark’ … the box set has the same name after all!"

I did find the remastered albums to sound better, although a lot of people (including the beefheart, com writer) lament the "loudness". I couldn't care less - loudness and autotune were created by God to make me feel better.

  10. Was there ever a link for 'Lick My Vocals Off, Baby'? Thanks.

I saw the Captain at New Years 1975-76. He and The Magic Band opened. Todd Rundgren was supposed to be next but he didn't show. He was replaced by Leon Russell at the piano. No band. Then the Captain came back out with Frank Zappa doing things that would later appear on Bong Fury. It was a great show but it lost it's momentum as Utopia was replaced by a guy at the piano.

    2. Thanks Farq

That show was in Los Angeles. I think with such a large local pool to draw from when they had a cancellation they would just get on the phone for a replacement. Probably why I saw Canned Heat so many times back then. And while I like Russell he just didn't fit in that slot.

    3. In the U.K., Stray was the go-to band for replacement duties. They'd travel the length of the land for a support gig at a polytechnic dance. They were hard to avoid.
