Bambi Is A Man Man Fan, Man! Dept.

A recent Grateful Dead feature story, got me thinking [muses bambi - Ed.] about the wonderful Welsh band Man. Man began in 1968 and are still going now. They were formed from members of The Bystanders a successful singles band of the 60’s, however Man were much more psychedelic, their first album is mainly short songs but later albums had longer jam numbers, and their concerts would regularly feature a couple of 20 minute plus tracks. They were particularly popular in Germany, but rarely kept the same line-up for each album or tour. By the end of 1976 they broke up.

I’m too young and good looking [sic - Ed.] to have seen the band at their peak 1971-1976, however at the end of the 70’s you could pick up their wonderful albums cheaply in the secondhand shops, and every one I bought was ‘a cracker’. They were notable for releasing many live albums, and this is why I think of them and The Dead. Also the attached link has wonderful Rick Griffin cover art, based on the Slow Motion album art, you’ll know Rick Griffin for work he did for Quicksilver Messengers, Big Brother and The Grateful Dead. [Farq recreates original art, pre-restraining order from Mad Magazine, above - Ed.]

In 1983 Man reformed, and I was lucky enough to see them at my first ever festival, The 1983 Reading Festival. The line-up was wonderful, including Thin Lizzy, Ten Years After, Little Steven, Black Sabbath (with Ian Gillan on vocals), The Enid and Man. Also on the bill was a special guest from the USA, who none of my friends had heard of, his name Stevie Ray Vaughan. Fortunately I was able to persuade a few of my friends to leave the pub (The Moderation), and we witnessed his first gig in the UK, and it was magnificent.

Man played mid Friday afternoon, and we all enjoyed their energetic set. Over the years I’ve seen Man on may occasions, and amassed most of their great albums. One of their most famous live albums from 1975 is called Maximum Darkness and features John Cipollina, but some of Cipollina’s erratic playing was erased on one track and replaced by a Mickie Jones solo.

However from the same year, the attached linkage is a great (but not complete) live set from Berkeley in 1975 plus a few other live tracks I tagged on. This is, I think one of their best concerts, both sonically pro recording and also great performance, and the other tracks make for a great Man sampler - John Cipollina is not on this recording. Superb quality, even if you’re a fan of the band you may not have these tracks, Berkeley 1976 was officially released but that was a different line-up, and I don’t think that’s as good as this, mwynhau.

Readers will know Bambi better as porn star Studly Von Stagge in straight-to-video hits such as Air Hostess Hostel, Air Hostess Hospital,  Air Hostess Hospice, Erotic Amputees, and the popular Soup Kitchen franchise. He is currently "between projects".

  2. Thanks Farq. An underappreciated band with many interesting offshoots.

    1. Thank you very much Bambi. I'm digging it. You ever listen to The Green Ray?

  3. I am told I saw them at Stonehenge in 1984, but I was struggling with cosmic consciousness and stars that wouldn't stop moving around which was something of a distraction. If I could find the freaking link here, I could see what all the fuss was about.

    1. Mr Grimsdale the link is hidden as punctuation.
From all I've heard about Stonehenge Festival I'm not surprised you got a bit 'confused' - was that the year Cardiacs played?

    2. I apologise for the Stealth Link© - Bambi said "make the freeloading bums work for it!" I remonstrated strongly but I don't make the rules.

    3. In 1967, thanks to Big Cat malt liquor and MezcaI, I didn't see The Doors and The Jefferson Airplane in Venice CA., even though I was in attendance.

Should have listened to the old saying: "Big Cat, BIG mistake"

    4. Yes, Cardiacs, Hawkwind, Alan Stivell, Man... and the most astonishing variety of flagrant vitamin sales I have ever seen. With mostly lovely weather, it made for a fantabulous week of mischief.

  4. When the album Slow Motion was released, the cover image was cropped to show mainly just the fish after Mad Magazine didn't want to show Alfred.

Also I should have mentioned that after they split in 1976, Terry Williams the Man drummer went onto a have a very successful career involving two years playing in Meatloafs band and then six years as drummer with Dire Straits until they split in 1988.

I hope the above linkage is of interest, as I believe their albums from 71-76, are rather special and hope some of the 4or5 guys discover this great Welsh group. Btw they don't sing in the Welsh language.

    1. And don't forget Terry's stint with Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe and Billy Bremner in Rockpile - a conglomeration worthy of screedage.

    2. Yes Terry was busy after the breakup of Man. He's also on the Stiffs Live album. Rockpile is a band I know very little of.

    3. Not much legitimately released by the band, but Edmunds, Lowe and Bremner all released solo albums which are well worth hearing. Bremner is a vastly underrated player. However, quite a few good quality Rockpile boots are easy to track down.

    5. Thanks SteveShark, I'll give this a listen today. I saw Nick Lowe playing at Glastonbury Festival late 1990's. I wasn't too familiar with his stuff but, he and his band were just great, saw him again in a pub about 7 years ago, and again he was wonderful. Thanks very much for the linkage.

    6. SteveShark, I listened to the Rockpile 78 last night, great stuff, bet they were great to see live. Songs less that four minutes, no fat on any of them, bang, bang, bang, splendid thank you.

    1. Ah ha! Thanks for posting the Slow Motion elpee Farq, this and a little bit of further investigation, has answered some questions I had about the incomplete Berkeley Live 1975 concert I posted. I got those tracks about ten years ago from a long gone website, but it appears they were the extra tracks on Slow Motion cd reissue (above), and also two more from the Maximum Darkness cd reissue.

  6. Fine band, with several interesting off-shoots - Help Yourself, Neutrons and The Green Ray. Saw Man a few times, once memorably when they had the laidback afternoon slot at Cropredy, and decided it would be a great idea to unleash a very loud set with gales of feedback on the unsuspecting dozing crowd of folkies. Nice one!

    1. Hi Geri, I was there too. Even though I used to love that festivals folky vibes, it was often great to be 'woken up' by some ROCK! The Leningrad Cowboys the year before, was a splendid event. By 2008/9 it was too big for me, I only go to small festivals these days, and it's becoming hard work.

    2. Me too, Bambi. Bailed out in the early nineties, got too regimented, too much health and safety stuff, and too big. So many high points though in the earler years, RT, Percy Plant, All About Eve, Plainsong, actually way too many to list.

    3. Before mobile phones, when going to Cropredy my friends and I would drive up from various places, meeting at Banbury Cross car park, before going to the festival. One year about 10 of us were in the car park about to set of for the festival when Robert (Percy) Plant and his 'niece' walked past, we were shocked when leaving his 'niece' to walk to the hotel, he turned round and came over for a chat. He must have been with us for 10 minutes, and didn't take offense when asked "You're not a looky likey are you?", a genuinely lovely bloke.

      Delete
    4. Yes the hotel was just over the road, and to be honest his 'niece' may have been frightened by the sight of us 'hairy' folkies, who mostly looked like we could've been in a Black Sabbath tribute band. I recall one of us was wearing a Led Zeppelin tee shirt.

    5. There's a disconnect between the image of a big hairy heavy metal enthusiast and .. your name - Bambi. I mean, the name Bambi brings to mind, and I'm sure I'm not alone here, the most obvious image one associates with the name, is a buxom blonde porn star. Amirite?

      Delete
    6. Well... I've never been so insulted in all my life. But Bambi is a diminutive form of the Italian word "bambino", and the name was made famous by the Disney film, I'm sorry to say I'm not familiar with the film star or type of film that you refer to. Quite frankly I'm shocked, but maybe that explains all the sticky 'foam' around the Island.
Getting back to your point, we didn't look like the stereotype 'folkies' but because a few of us had been involved in English civil war reenactment societies, we liked a lot of folk music and real ale. But we would also go and see Motorhead whenever they came to town. I saw two of the Cropredy Festival guys this week, one is no longer 'hairy', but the other looks and dresses just like he did in the 80's/90's only now with grey beard and hair.

    7. I've just looked up Sea Foam on tinternet, and it's also known as Ocean Foam or Spume, and it's caused by all sorts of things, including human activities(!), but the write-up was very wordy so I gave up reading. All I'm saying is careful where you step.

It's called Spume (stop laughing at the back)- Isle of Spume, no Isle of Foam is much better.

  7. great band, as to the post title apparently the kid that voiced Bambi in the movie grew up to be a marine drill instructer and spent his whole career worried that someone would find out he was the voice of Bambi and be a pain about it

I wasn't into them at the time (the drummer in our band liked them, so that was a turnoff) but will relisten.

  10. Saw Man a lot in 74-5 when they toured with my mates Badfinger second on bill. Terry Williams was an amazing drummer, even when tripping, which was often.

    1. Hi Rowan, sorry to be a pedant, but "Be Good to Yourself at Least Once a Day" is/was a studio album when released. However it seems on reissues most of the Man albums now have additional live tracks as extras. I still have the albums on vinyl, and it is excellent, even though Martin Ace and Deke Leonard had temporarily left the band. By the cover photo it does look like it would be a live album, and contains Bananas, maybe their most famous/infamous song. Lyrics below

      I like to eat bananas
      'Cos they got no bones
      I like marijuana
      'Cos it gets me stoned
Put a seed into the ground
Wait for the sun to come around
Nurture it with love and care
Give it sun and rain and air
      There, oh there
      There, oh
      You gotta let it grow
      Let it grow
Come on, wait for it to sprout
Then you get your Rizlas out

      Delete
    2. Hmm...I'll have to compare that with the Hoosier Hot Shots 1936 release of " I Like Bananas, Because They Have No Bones."

Ha, and no-one's even mentioned the map of Wales or the family tree. Let's see Mr Album Re-Designer III have a go at bettering that - best album cover in the world ever (unless you know different).

  15. Thanks Mr. "Von Stagge" (big fan here!). Looks like I have have some of Man's releases in my library but didn't really know anything about them so it's always nice when one of the 4/5 shines the flashlight on an artist. I think I've subconsciously muddled Man together in my mind with the not so great psych/blues rock "Fraternity of Man." Now that those wires are uncrossed I'm looking forward to hearing this live recording. Another artist to make one proud to be part Welsh!
