David Lynch's Toilet O'Tunes Dept.

Foam-O-Graph© on a roll!

Dishy David
Lynch is of course celebrated for his family values comedies for Disney, such as Eraserhead and the long-running sitcom Twin Peaks, but did you know he listens to music solely in his toilet? He's had the bowl connected to a record player in the next room, and spends hours in there, often receiving guests while they audition his latest album purchases!

FT3 Whence came this idea, Dave?

DL [laughs] It was during a visit to Fabulous False Memory Foam Island©, Farq, as well you know!

FT3 [laughs]

DL You were so gracious as to shew me Sir Kubrick's Tub O' Tunes -

FT3 Do you mean https://falsememoryfoam.blogspot.com/2021/04/stanley-kubricks-indie-rock-bathroom.html?

DL [laughs] So naturally, as a major motion picture helmer myself, I had to add my own Lynchian twist to the proceedings! [makes fart noise]

FT3 [laughs]

Can you identify the music emanating from the Lynchian Loo, subscribers? There's a Grand Prize of some wonderful car seat covers for the lucky winner! Clew in the comments!

(Feel free to use the above space to add your own toilet door graffiti!)

  1. This week's kwiz is a little different, being as how which the clew is an actual recording from famed director David Lynch's toilet!

Your mission - should you decide to accept it - DL (SWIDT?) the recording from this convenient link - it's only a few seconds long - and Name That Tune!

Except, of course, the one thing you mustn't do is Name That Tune. Nor the artist, nor the album!

    Oboy! Some fun, huh, gang?

      Hi Draftervoi,

As a new chap round here, I was looking back through the old posts, courtesy of Farquahar's fickle finger of randomness and came upon some references from yourself to Mabuhay Gardens.

As a student, and courtesy of Freddie Laker's cheap flights, I did a Greyhound Bus tour of the US&A in 1979 and my diary records a visit to Mabuhay Gardens on 24th July 1979 where I saw The Dead Kennedys, VIPs, The Rotters, The Punts and KTels. My diary tells me that Dead Kennedys did a cover of Back in the USSR and that my favourite band was The Punts. From memory I don't think The Dead Kennedys had been heard of in the U of K at that point, but I got kudos later when California Uber Alles came out. Is it possible that I was in the same room as a future Isle of Foam resident all those years ago?

Incidentally, you got as far as me with the drum and the bass. I was really trying to get it to be Do You Want to Know a Secret, as Lennon apparently recorded a demo of it in a toilet complete with flush. The demo has not survived, but I was wondering if perhaps the tide might have washed it up on the beach at the Isle of Foam. Not that I am suggesting that all flotsam and jetsom, or sewage for that matter, eventually arrives here, that would just be plain rude.

    3. Sorry. Time differences play havok with these worldwide conversations. I was not at that particular Mabuhah Gardens show, but was a regular from '78 through '83.

I didn't play very well but was in a succession of bands that mainly consisted of rehearsals involving a lot of beer and drugs and spending more time on "coming up with a cool band name" than "repeating the notes until we got it right." To our credit, we came up with the "Gang of Four" back in 1977, before we'd ever heard of the Gang of Four.

I switched to bass from guitar ("fewer strings") and slowly developed some rudimentary skills. I met Hank Maninger, bass player for the Punts, through a class at S.F. State on the novels of Vladimir Nabokov. I took lessons from Hank, and did some minor "roadie" work for the Punts.

They say talent will out, but persistence pays off, too, and by '82/'83 I played the Fab Mab several times, and also the Chi Chi Club across the street. The band was the Corvairs (but not the same make, model, or year as the '78-'79 Corvairs; we didn't know they existed until the Internet revealed they played the Mab before us).

One fond memory is a lunchtime gig at Sproul Plaza at UC Berkeley. The promoters asked if they could bump us from the slot so the Simple Minds could play instead...and we told 'em to go fly a kite. The language used by our drummer was a bit saltier than that, but as you're in the nobility, I want to maintain a sense of decorum. Plus, the Special Relationship and international amity and all that, too.

Hank from the Punts went on to a lifetime as musician (a quick google reveals that he just played the Kensington Farmer's Market yesterday...had I known I would have gone to see him. Lead singer Bonnie Hayes also had a successful career as a songwriter. Drummer Kevin Hayes (her brother) did 20 years beating the skins for the Robert Cray Band. Discogs.com says guitarist Paul Davis "died on November, 10, 2007 of complications with his elbow caused by Carpal Tunnel."

So...I wasn't at the same gig as you, but defintely at the Mab in those years.

Ha, always interesting to see what goes on in other corners of the world and then find out its absolutely no different to where I was in the late 70's. Although I was never in a band, being totally tone deaf, I enjoyed your comments about "coming up with a cool band name". I was a student in Liverpool then and spent a lot of time in a club called Erics, which unleashed a lot of bands with really "COOL" names on an unsuspecting public, to varying degrees of success, such as : Teardrop Explodes, Echo and the Bunneymen, Wah Heat, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Big in Japan, Pink Military Stands Alone, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Hambi & the Dance, Dead or Alive, Those Naughty Lumps, Torchy & the Moonbeams etc etc...., where any of those cool? But then again what band names are cool? The Beatles?

Anyway, it was good to hear about The Punts, did they ever record anything? My diary says they sounded like Talking Heads playing Devo songs, but as I said I'm tone deaf, so don't pay any attention to that.

My diary also tells me we spent time in Rather Ripped Records in Berkeley, if that means anything to you.

    7. Jonder's right, but that single wasn't the end of it.

At the time, the rumor was Punts was short for "Punk Cunts." Considering that other Fab Mab bands had names like the Dickheads, Assholes, I'm inclined to believe it.

Anyway... the Punts got signed to Slash Records, a Los Angeles indie label. The album was recorded, finished, ready to go...and the label told them to change their name. Y'know, throw away three years of building Bay Area name recognition from Santa Rosa to Santa Cruz as a hot live band, and start over...and we'll make you stars! I got a call from Hank; they had to come up with a name and everyone in the band's circle of friends was asked to contribute possible names. I'm sure I recycled all those "cool" names...but what they went with was "Bonnie Hayes & the Wild Combo."

The LP itself was great... It's a solid, enjoyable New Wave/Pop-rock record, reissed in 2020 as an expanded edition with the single Jonder mentioned, and a five song EP ("Brave New Girl") self-released after Slash dropped them.

Rather Ripped means a heck of a lot to me...I lived 20 miles east, in Walnut Creek. There were record stores, but it was all mainstream, Top 40 kind of places. Rather Ripped had IMPORTS from the U.K. by bands we'd never heard of, and magazines like Melody Maker that reviewed these strange, unknown bands.

I was 5,300 miles west of London but enthralled by the likes of Eddie & the Hot Rods, the Jolt, and the Damned. It was a sad day when Rather Ripped closed down. There's a paragraph on this blog that sums that store up..."The hippest, most ultra-cool record store in Berkeley was Rather Ripped Records, on Hearst and Euclid. It was Northside, relatively far from the turmoil of Southside and Telegraph Avenue. Do you recall the kind of record store where everyone was too cool for words, they knew all the Kinks b-sides by heart, and could tell you the difference between the first and second pressing of Pink Floyd albums by reading the scratchings in the vinyl? Rather Ripped was the model for all of those stores." https://rockarchaeology101.blogspot.com/2020/09/2119-university-avenue-berkeley-ca.html

    8. To Jonder's VIP 45 rpm release, I can add that the VIP's also had a track on the 1980 415 Records compilation. Their lead singer was Jennifer Miro, formerly of the Nuns...the first "punk" booking at the Mabuhay Gardens in Decemer 1976 (info: https://www.discogs.com/release/581783-Various-415-Music) I did a rip of the vinyl on a good turntable and you can download it at https://mega.nz/file/mBByGLgY#ylJXkcDwwuePmeK_fssUCLNuOlfdrSwCaQuaei94VCs

    10. You can say that again.

Ye Olde English Noblemon picked a fine night to visit the Fab Mab: Bonnie Hayes, Jennifer Miro, Jello Biafra, and the band that pissed off Stevie Nicks by offering a mustache ride.

A decade later, Bonnie Raitt's album Nick Of Time was a massive success, and two of its hit singles ("Love Letter" and "Have A Heart") were written by the former frontwoman of the Punk Cunts.

My diary, does actually mention my suprise at finding so many English singles there and that they had actually heard of John Otway!

In my time in Liverpool, the only record shop that mattered was called Probe, in the same street as Erics club. I've just looked it up and it's still going strong. In 1977-1980 it was were all the musicians that played at Erics hung out.

There's a good write up on it, here Probe Record Shop and to quote from it :

"Proof of how central the shop was to the scene at the time is that future FGTH dancer and vocalist Paul Rutherford worked as a shop assistant, along with Wah’s! Pete Wylie. Most famous of all however was future Dead or Alive frontman and Celebrity Big Brother contestant Pete Burns. Burns kept the store’s policy of ‘constructive criticism’ of customer’s choices instigated by Davies alive.

According to Julian Cope’s memoirs, Head On, Davies’ reply to a buyer hoping to purchase the new Rush album was "No, you fucking can’t have the new Rush album. Where do you think you are, Virgin Records?" Davies later downplayed this abrasive attitude, stating, clarified this, "…the fact is, I would always take the money. I’d sell ‘em the record, and maybe just insult them. Or at least give them some advice."

The story that I remember from the time was that Burns would go to get the "unhip" record from the back room, whip his trousers down and wipe it on part of his anatomy. His girlfriend, who also worked there, would do something similar, but slightly different, before handing it to the unsuspecting punter.

My abiding memory of the pair was the surreal (in the sewing machine, umbrella and operating table sense) sight of them on their way into Probe. He was dressed in weird black leather gear, much as he was when he became a "star", but without the face sculpting, his girlfriend was dressed all in siver, with a silver wig, and they were pushing a perfectly normal pram containing a perfectly normal baby in a perfectly normal romper suit.

Thanks to all, for the details behind the bands I briefly encountered 40 odd years ago, glad I kept a diary!

Details on the Bonnie Hayes release are here :

I would give it a listen...

In the liner notes to the new release Bonnie writes, “I figure that there might be people who didn’t get to hear some of this stuff the first time around but would like it now, and some tidbits for collectors and my four fans."

Rod Stewart received a set of car seat covers as payment for his singing on Python Lee Jackson's In Broken Dream. I don't suppose that was a clew was it?

David Bentley was the keyboardist in the PLJ's but did not want to sing it. However he has since recorded a bliddy good version of it in a jazzy stylee, which I'm quite keen on.

All of this is really just shorthand for saying I haven't the faintest.

It's probably that I've just never got round to investigating them. I've never mixed with anyone who enthused about them and tried to get me hooked. However, in my book of singles wot I bought in date order, "Do it Again" is at number 3, (no 1 is Hi ho Silver Lining and no 2 is Nutrocker and if you are really interested you could always shout out a random number and I can let you know what lies there).

Anyway, now that I am mixing with a better class of 4 or 5 people, maybe you can all point me in the right direction. After all, I am educating myself on stuff that passed me by in years gone by, so I could add it to the current rotation of Rory Gallagher, Van Der Graf Generator, Bobbie Gentry, The Go Betweens and The Byrds, with Swan Arcade for some light relief.

As for Steeleye Span, or The Span, as I'm sure no-one calls them, I always thought Maddy Prior was a bit earnest, but I do quite care for the lp Parcel of Rogues, I could never resist the image of someone riding on a goosie, but that's enough of my pecadillos.

So if anyone wants to throw a bit of Dan at me, I'll give it a go.
