Play Some New! Dept.

There's not much "new" (as in recorded this century) music played on the Isle O' Foam©. This is because it's the product of a mediocre, smug, self-obsessed generation utterly incapable of coming up with a tune as good as (say) I'm A Believer. But occasionally - so occasionally that it's statistically insignificant - I'll hear something that doesn't make me want to hold my breath until I pass out.

The Ruby Suns are obviously fans of Brian Wilson, which is fine by me. But their - his, whatever - music does more than just channel or reference [Millennialspeak for copy - Ed.] the Beach Boys. You won't find anything as glorious as Good Vibrations here, or even, God help us, I Wanna Pick You Up. What you do get are imaginative, thoughtful, sometimes beautiful little pieces, nicely played and sung, avoiding lo-fi pretension. Keepers.

Here's three of their albums, with the usual fake-charming homemade covers. Actually the zebra is okay. They slipped up with that one. If you have others, I'd be interested.

You have just been participating in a sample test of our area alert system. Your concern at this point is enough.

    1. Is that your daddy's charger card?

I got it out of his drawer, next to his gun and balloons.

      Insert Here.

  4. I think he's offering you part of his overdraft but, I can't banter about the banking branch known as the music industry? We're talking about a completely different kind of interest. We can't calibrate EVERYTHING to the greatness of Auckland's Music Convention. Theirs was not ambiguous or insincere. 50 years of non-FAME is part of the magic that could not be hidden by low bid graphics. So, what of The Ruby Suns? That you would recommend ANY modern product of the music industry is remarkable enough...so, that gives them some credentials. But, this is the EntitleMEllennium and those credentials alone won't get them past the authenticity police. It doesn't matter what social mechanisms are to blame. Music must have substance. The kind that comes from experience. Here in lies the rub. It's not anything that deserves to be justified. It's just that the modern world is of an instant coffee mentality. That's why I'll usually hear genuine substance in a 50 year old piece of obscurity without even trying. But, the naive innocence is gone and so, expect the substance to be in direct proportion.
GOD, that sounds harsh...but I will remain open minded but not because they're entitled to it. I still believe in magic and all of the ideals that go with my 60 year old Youth. farq's tastes are the other reason...
ALL records should be judged by their graphics. Thanks for this endorsed opportunity!

  10. I'd make an attempt at saying something clever, like maybe . . .

    ... "OK, Computer" ...

But that'd prolly get us going down a wormyhole where endless links and lists and lisps of "You May Also Like" moderne dislikes reside...

Oh, and, THANKS for the "Some(thing) New!" --- The "Un-Stealthy" link!

Oh. Yes I have: nobody does Brian Wilson better than Lewis Taylor. Except Brian Wilson and The Wondermints, possibly.

Also, Starcastle were very good at doing Yes.

    Cheers, Peanuts Molloy.

    1. One of the best Brian Hommages [Fr. - cheese - Ed.] is Pale And Precious by Swindon's finest, The Dukes Of XTCophear. Recently, The Explorers Club has done some fine work in that direction.

  12. Absolutely right about The Explorers Club. They do great stuff. Heavily influenced by Marion's boys, Paul & Barry Ryan of course. Underrated lads.

  14. Pick to click!:

    Barry Ryan's "Eloise"

As found on Barry Ryan's ElPee "Barry Ryan Sings Paul Ryan"

Some 45s credit: "Barry Ryan with the Majority"

    File Under:

    "Pop Rock, Symphonic Rock"

Quite hard to find in true stereo but well worth the effort!

    1. Yeah. Paul & Barry Ryan. It's only very recently that I realised how good they were. How did twins from Leeds come up with sunshine pop like "I made her that way" etc, etc in 1967 and I wasn't listening? Eh?

    2. No one can listen when their records are NOT EVEN ISSUED in their country...

Chalk (Or CLick?) up one for The Interwebs. Removing borders/walls & other assorted idioticness for over 30 years now. Or something like that.
