Peanuts Molloy brought this guy up on a mainland internet forum, and it occurred to me that Michael Chapman might not be as widely known, especially in the Benighted States, as I assumed.
So these are for the One Or Two Out Of The Three Or Four Guys© who haven't yet heard (of) him, so they can brag to their lowlife pals at the racetrack dey wus always into dis guy.
His first three "proper" albums, 69-71, presented at a hauntingly lifelike 192. Like, digsville.
Preface to the Revised Edition: It's harder to format these
ReplyDeletegoddam comments properly than it is to find the goddam
stealth links.
The Michael Chapman release with which I'm familiar is
"The Resurrection and Revenge of the Clayton Peacock,"
variously described by Amazon clientele not only as "a sonic
poem, abstract if you like" but also as "2 tracks of garbage."
I sense that to have heard (of) Michael Chapman by starting
THERE must be like having heard (of) Lou Reed by starting with
"Metal Machine Music." In consequence, I beseech thee for the
linkage that would enable me finally to lord it over the
riffraff ["not any of the other 4 or 5 guys" -- ED] with
justified self-esteem.
You may have noticed the absence of Stealth Links. All part of the new "make life easy" stragedy here at Froth Central.
ReplyDeleteDis here's da linkage: https://workupload.com/file/h82A5VPRAfH
If you like this guy half as much as I do, then I like him twice as much as you, so it's a win-win situation we're lookin' at here.
Why, certainly, but then if I end up enjoying his work twi -- aaargh, now I'm all, like, blinded with science innit. (I mean, thanks!)
DeleteBang bang! You're Thomas Dolby
DeleteI still have my vinyl copy of Fully Qualified Survivor which I have seen described as "one of the best psych-folk records recorded. Ever."
ReplyDeleteHere is something a wee bit earlier from Michael Chapman: 1967's Live at Folk Cottage, Cornwall - https://we.tl/t-dLUKvYCPIx (in glorious 192kbps as per your wont)
Recorded on Good Friday, 24th March 1967 at the Folk Cottage, Mitchell, near Newquay in Cornwall.
As he writes on his website: "I had an art college education and, on a rainy night in 1966, I went into a pub in Cornwall, but I couldn't afford to pay to go in. So I said, I'll tell you what, I don't want to stay outside in the rain, I'll play guitar for half an hour for you. They offered me a job for the rest of the summer and I've been at it ever since."
And, yes, I wus always into dis guy - he is gigging again in September (aged 79 years)
Love Micheal Chapman since his Rainmaker days, seen him several tmes, wonderful artist although his northern humour can sometimes be a bit hit and miss. Missed this oppertunity to hear this 1967 gig, any chance of re-upping?
DeleteDon't have the live one!
DeleteNo worries, thanks for the reply.
DeleteAs mentioned elsewhere, it took me 48 years to hear Fully Qualified Survivor. How that happened I'll never understand.
ReplyDeleteCheers, Peanuts Molloy.
Here in U.S.A., Michael is better known in euphoric states, than he is in benighted states.
ReplyDeletethanks for "Wrecked Again", i'd been looking for this. I saw MC in a bar with about 8 other paying customers, opened for Ryley Walker! Great night.
ReplyDeleteThank you, farq.
ReplyDeleteBe-knighted States Of Euphoria...
I dub thee Sir Loin Of Steak!
The mighty Harvest Label is too much to resist!
The comments are my other reason.
At least i can boast not only to
ReplyDeletehave seen him in concert but also still be capable to play some of his songs. Great fingerpickin Style (him, not me), which I had to alter (that means simplify) to make it enjoyable for playing and listening. (Yes, really, learn to play the guitar: the dames are enthusiatic about it, no matter how bad you play - yeah you knew that already ;-)
I've mainly been listening to this stuff lately, but I'll give this Chapstick fellow a listen in between the Flippertronics. Um, thank you.
ReplyDeleteThanks Farq -- this will most certainly boost my cred as I only had some of his later albums! Up on the shelf they go
