Class Of '71

Jack Daugherty tried to sue A&M for downplaying his production contributions to the early Carpenters albums, and lost. But whatever he didn't contribute to those sessions, he made up for on this, his solo outing from '71. Solo is something of a misnomer - the musician credits, stretched end to end, would run from Anaheim, through Azusa, all the way to Cucamonga. It qualifies as jazz, but shares that hip Don Sebesky/Dave Grusin Malibu soundtrack vibe.

  1. Uncannny. Either that or canned & hammy.

I just picked up a dozen or so Carp..........enters CDs for a song... From a loco library's on-site used book shop. A few of 'em are plastered with library labels, ink-stamps & such. On one of them the ink-stampage says:

"Donated to the People of Downey & the Downey Library by Richard Carpenter"

Who knows how it got a 100 or so miles SOUTH of there, where I now sit & type-oh this . . .

    1. This is a swell album. Far from muzak.

I wonder if there was a ceremony at Downey Town Hall, with Richard presenting the Mayor with the album, both grinning for the photo-op? I like to think so. A fine Foam Moment©.

Also, that stamp must add at least 5 cents to the collectors' value, so kudos!

    2. There's an enlightening - and scary - Carpenters piece in RS Magazine which contains this startling quote:

"Among the pop musicians [Richard Carpenter] has most admired are Frank Zappa, Brian Wilson and Jim Morrison."

    3. Wow. That cover image of the duo alone is enough to keep the psychobabblists busy for ages...

Random thoughts for pointless ponderage time!

      A Carpenter is either:

A whiter-than-white, some might say blander-than-buttered, cold white bread, pop singing group member.

      ...Or...

A person who makes a living doing the manliest of manly kind of hammer & nails type thing all the live long day.

      Downey is either:

The home turf of BOTH . . .

      The Blasters

      AND

      The Carpenters

      ...Or...

A fabric softener with a cutesy cuddly fluffy stuffed bear as its mascot.

      ...Or...
