Band With Shit Name Makes Swell Records Dept. - Garcia Peoples

Rare shot of Young People Today getting life by the nuts.

In Stephen Thomas
Pencilneck's definitive Encyclopædia of Shit Band Names (Pompousass Press, 2021) Garcia Peoples get their own chapter. What could they have been thinking? Well about Jerry, I suppose, and how they were in some sense "his people". A mumbled remark that should have been immediately forgotten in the thick fog of bong smoke. But no. They're stuck with it, and so are we. Which is a shame. A damn shame.

Very little *finger-waggle* contemporary music avoids a quick slide into my trash bin. I freely admit this ain't my world any more, and young people, while being individually fine upstanding human beings, collectively know shit, and do less. But sometimes - through blind luck as much as anything else - they make music that grabs me by the hair in my ears. I had a real hurdle to jump with their name, which is still something I can barely bring myself to type, leave alone say out loud. But every time a track by them comes up on shuffle, it stops me in my shuffling tracks and I pay attention. Yes, their record collection is as clear to me as if I was doing the butt-crack crouch in front of it, but it's not only the Dead. And they do something special with their influences, more than just copying (wupes - channeling, referencing). They're inventive, lively, thoughtful, adroit, and just tuneful enough. Plus, they're a real guitar band, so yay. Here's a bunch of their stuff. Like, digsville!

Note: GP Foamfeatured© antecedently, but not as comprehensively, and anyway, youse bums probably missed it. I'd put money on it.

  1. Did you ever have a car you loved, you really really loved? Closest for me was an MG Midget, which I slammed into the side of a sausage truck. It was never quite the same after that, and made me - briefly - vegetarian.

  5. A Stealth Link© has been clinically embedded into this comment using the latest in internet technology. It also contains a mind controlling algorithm, a suggestive invisible word, and a pair of glitter foam antlers. ONLY HERE at th' IoF© do you, Mr and Mrs Consumer, get the deep-down satisfaction you never asked for!

  6. A 1974 AMC green Gremlin. Piece of poop, but, man, did I love that car. Three on the tree. Managed to get a little in the front seat once. Impossible in the back seat; put two oranges back there and it was full.

  7. Yellow '62 Ford Fairlane van I bought in the 80s (the kind with the snub nose, and windows all around). My band toured the Left Coast in that until we blew a head gasket in Bellingham, WA on our way to a gig in Vancouver. Also spent a summer living in it parked some friends' driveway. Ahh youth ....

Oh yeah, Garcia Peoples! Big fan of all that neo-psych-country-folk stuff the kids are playing now (see "Doom & Gloom From the Tomb" and "Aquarium Drunkard" blogs to get hip with what's goin' down). Always been a fan of the Beachwood Sparks and it seems like there's a whole lot of that sort of "cosmic american music" now (to borrow from the other GP like everyone else is). Like me, you don't need to be into the Dead or "jam bands" to dig the soothing vibes of these cats. Rose City Band is another great one worthy of the 4-5 guys' attention.

One of the items I haven't been able to track down on my ever-growing wish list is Chris Forsyth & The Garcia Peoples Peoples Motel Band. Anyone happen to have that collaboration? Anyway -- great stuff!! Thanks for spreading the good word.

  12. The Rev Dr Baz reminisces; I was born & raised in a house in a working class estate in Bristol & it was only when I came to Australia that not being able to drive became an issue. The fact that not only had I never driven a car & had no intention to do so marked me as an oddball in the 70s - on a par with homosexuals, intellectuals, Commies, poets, non drinkers, socialists etc.
Fortuitously my late partner (an Australian) loved to drive & now the only journeys I undertake are into inner space.

  13. Responding to Mr Dave The Rev Dr Baz (spiritual advisor The Cosmonauts Of Inner Space). You are indeed correct in your assessment of the worthiness of these new fangled combos. I have the Chris Forsyth platter you mention & many more besides. If some kind soul could show me how to upload I would be most happy to share.

Sweet! Following the established protocol of the IoF, you just need to zip the folder, go to https://workupload.com/ and then select that .zip file you created. Once the upload is complete you simply paste the link created here. Easy-peasy, anonymous, and painless. I have a few related items of interest that that do not appear to be available anywhere so let me know if any of these are of interest to the scallywag pirates that inhabit this island. (anywhere other than Bandcamp that is -- all of these are available for streaming and purchasing there and you should support these artists! But I know you bums better than that)

    2. Please do loadup as advertised, MrDave. I have some but not others and I'm sure the rest of us are the same.

I use workupload because it is (for me) the fastest, simplest, accepts anything you throw at it, and doesn't make you jump through hoops. There are others just as good, but avoid the monetised file hosts please.

    3. I'll do a proper post for the Beachwood Sparks (including All Night Radio which is side-project/spin-off). They certainly deserve your reader's full and upright attention.

As for the other two items I listed ... On further inquiry, I may have deceived your readers as to their pricelessness, in so far as they were "name your price" items on Bandcamp that I had been intrigued enough to check out -- not long-standing must-have items on my wishlist that I finally broke down and blew my life savings on (the other forementioned BS related items however do fit that description so I will spend the time spotlighting those since I already spent all my hard earned dough on 'em). But as offered, here are the other two nonetheless which may prove pleasing to the other 4-5 guys though not really in the same wheelhouse as Garcia Peoples, Beachwood Sparks, Rose City Band, etc. "Intriguing" descriptions included below which readers may find intriguing enough to take a listen (though perhaps not more than that).

Tuluum Shimmering :: Sister Ray Meets China Cat Sunflower Uptown
Found this on Aquarium Drunkard's "Best of 2020" list which not coincidentally also featured Garcia Peoples' Nightcap at Wits’ End. As previously disclosed, this was a "name your price" album-length track that, depending on the situation, will either try your patience mightily or send you into a blissful state of ecstacy. Nice background music when your otherwise occupied or meditating on your floating "7 Chakra Yoga Mat"

      Intriguing Description:
"Jake Webster’s Tuluum Shimmering specializes in long, repetitive melodic abstractions. And while he’s [released? -Ed.] other deeply enjoyable cuts this year, his an (sic) hour-long blending of two songs by bands formerly known as the Warlocks, the Grateful Dead’s “China Cat Sunflower” and the Velvet Underground’s “Sister Ray.” [wtf?! this isn't even a sentence! What are these AD dudes smoking?!? -Ed.] A steady first half gives way to an ecstatic back end—this is melody cut loose from traditional form, yet maintaining its coherent shape."

More info on Tuluum Shimmering's work here: https://aquariumdrunkard.com/2020/05/01/tuluum-shimmerings-infinite-nostalgia/
(lots of other similar long blissful song mix/mash-ups available as "name your price" on the TS bandcamp page if this is your bag. I've been blissing out to his hour+ version of "Bird Song" while trying to write this -- nice!)

      Los Days :: Singing Sands
Found this as a featured review also on Aquarium Drunkard. May appeal to fans of Friends of Dean Martinez and similar instrumental acts sporting a Morricone western soundtrack vibe (or Ry Cooder's Paris Texas for that matter).

Intriguing Excerpt from AD Review (linked below):
"... top notch desert oasis soundtrack, offering compositions that evoke lazy afternoons in the cantina, sinister antagonists on the prowl, and the expanse of the cosmos, inner and outer. ... Patient, Dick Dale-toned riffs, acoustic Latin licks, and twilight-tinged melodic picking, all of which saunter alongside reliable percussion. A dusty and leisurely remote must-listen." | k fortinsky

    1. THANK YOU! I'm interested in more and I'm sure some of the other 4/5 guys would enjoy these modern psych explorations as well. Farfisa and phasing free improvisational (but grounded) bliss. There's really an abundance of great "cosmic american" and tuned-in music being made now though you'd never know it without having your ear to the ground (I guess it's always been that way more or less since the golden age when record labels & radio actually promoted the kind of great music often featured & discussed here e.g. byrds, beach boys, who, zep, etc, etc. Not that plenty of great acts weren't on big labels but popular taste didn't suck balls for a little while there)

  15. Thank you all for the Garcia Peoples, so far only managed to listen to one album but they sound good to me, I look forward to enjoying more over the weekend.
I never really got emotionally involved with a car, did have a VW Golf 25years ago that was nice to drive. Nowadays in the UK it make no difference whatever you drive, you'll still be stuck in the same tailback.

  16. Here`s 3 from Chris Forsyth & various combos - definitley worth checking out if you have a soft spot for electric guitars If you`re interested you can check out my Bandcamp page DocBaz. I have catholic tastes, I am partial to electric guitars, pedal steel, accordions, musical saw, Memphis, Saharan music & surprise, surprise gospel - I will upload anything you may desire, if that is copasetic with Mr Throckmorton III.
