Psychfan's Trip O' Th' Week - "I Almost Saw Disneyland"

I've written [writes Psychfan - Ed.] before about subjective reaction vs objective judgement. When David Bowie and Roxy Music appeared in the early seventies I was suspicious - a hippie who channels Anthony Newley? An effete metrosexual?

I was soon won over, however, by Bowie's ability to rock and by what I was startled to recognize as psychedelic elements in the work of Roxy (I was impressed by Out Of The Blue and Mother Of Pearl).

As a result when punk and disco arrived a few years later I was prepared to look past my initial impression that they were purely reactionary movements. I never identified with either in terms of lifestyle, but when post punk evolved as a music incorporating elements of both (as well as something that still felt like psych to me) I felt like part of the target audience again.

My favorite late seventies band was Talking Heads, who embodied this development. Remain In Light gets all of the attention (and it's a great album) but I think that their second LP doesn't get enough.

More Songs About Buildings And Food is a classic, one of those albums where every song is strong , the energy keeps building throughout and a distinctive vision is expressed in the process. The cover represents a vision of altered consciousness that's been updated for the (very) beginning of the digital age.

By 1981 David Byrne was a solo artist and he collaborated with Brian Eno (from early Roxy Music!) on another classic, the very psychedelic My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts.

This is a mashup LP using voices captured from radio and TV. Some are singing, some are speaking. The voices used include a conservative radio host, a black preacher in front of an energetic flock, a middle eastern singer and a Catholic priest conducting an exorcism.

The voices are combined with rhythmic and compelling music by Eno and Byrne to hypnotic effect.

Oh, yeah - Disneyland. In 1979 I spent several months visiting friends in LA and one day we dropped acid and piled into the car to go to Disneyland. We got lost on the freeway (even though one of us was a lifelong LA resident) and didn't get there until thirty minutes before closing. It was explained to me that you couldn't even get through the parking lot in thirty minutes and we turned around and drove back to the beach.

Our soundtrack for the journey was More Songs About Buildings And Food.

Don't try to tell me it's not psychedelic.

  2. Psychfan dropped Acid? Oh my!

    Byrne made Asperger's hip(ish).

Saw The Talking Heads in 1982, at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in Queens, NY. The drug of choice (not mine) was freebased cocaine. We brought our friend "Fun Gus", who's a "fun guy"! (for fans of homophones)
    If you gotta' ask......

  3. The only Talking Heads record I ever bought was the first 45 - Love Goes To Building On Fire, in (I just looked it up) '77. They've been off my radar ever since. Mainly because David Byrne gives me hives, but I'll give More Songs a spin.

  4. Talking heads never sparked for me as more than pretty good pop music/ post punk psychedelic as a label for me seems to bring up Psychic Tv, Joy Division, Throbbing Gristle, Foetus,Pere Ubu, Chrome, Residents (although they were also pre punk psychedelic, maybe pan ages psych) in my head

  5. I have an obnoxious amount i could say re these old pals, but here's a couple!
Chris once told me i reminded him of Syd Barrett, i guess in appearance, music, & schizzy psychedlicness. I wasnt a pink floyd or syd fan then [worship syd now] so i really didnt appreciate the flattering depth of the comparison....
It was the new years eve of 78 into 79 i think that i spent [chastely] the festive night at the 8th st. apartment of andrea kovacs whose other guest was mary clarke...andrea was a risd whizkid whose artworks involved closeup polaroids of flesh, likely an inspiration of David's polaroid collage for the album cover [i recall seeing the original at his loft on my street, east 7th]
just us 3 andrea mary-- & me on the sofa in liv room
---the funny thing is that Andrea was then Byrne's boyfriend and Mary soon replaced her!

  6. I only bought one Talking Heads album - "Remain in Light", and that was because I was an Adrian Belew fan from his time with Zappa and Bowie.

They always came across to me as Blondie's evil and more intellectual twins.

    2. I've always wondered about that album - did the band really play all the instruments themselves, or did they get the Wrecking Crew in?

    3. I think it was a Rudy Van Gelder Blue Note session they overdubbed the voices onto. I'm sure I'm hearing Grant Green in there.

  10. So, the original pressing of Ghosts with the track "Qu'ran" is a collector's item of sorts? Sadly, it doesn't look like there's a hell of a lot of demand for it. Nonetheless, I'll try to remember to put it in the "Sell For More Than A Dollar" pile for my widow to ignore.

I stayed with the Heads longer than Farq, but much as I appreciate Adrian Belew (a little), I vastly preferred the original nerdy trio/quartet version of the group. By the time David decided he was Flaming Desi Arnaz On The Spectrum, I was outta there.

    1. I kinda like the idea of David Byrne playing Ricky Ricardo....
Hazy Dave is referring to one of the bonus tracks on the My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts reissue posted here. Some of them got eliminated from the LP release due to licensing and/or censorship issues.

  11. I've been a huge fan of My Life in the Bush of Ghosts since the first time I heard it as a teenager but it took me longer to warm to the Talking Heads than it should of considering it was pretty much expected from someone in my musical demographic. I'm a big fan now especially of the trio of albums with Eno starting with this one and culminating in my favorite of theirs, Remain in Light (for the sheer atmosphere if nothing else).

  13. Talking Heads live concert film Stop Making Sense is one of the best concert films ever IMHO. Also I love My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.

BTW I've been without a computer for 2 weeks, looks like there have been plenty of posts, thanks Farq and the 4or5 guys. I have lots of catching up to do.
