We're pitting ethereal Romany songstress Vashti Bunyan against dwarfish minions from Hades Thę Blüė Ōystër Cúlts in what promises to be a savage bloodbath of balladry!
Vashti Bunyan's debut album Just Another Diamond Day - which I had on white label vinyl back when stuff like that meant something to me - is a jewel-like, gossamer thing, too delicate to cast a shadow. Vashti now lives in Lothlorien, making dreamcatchers from elf ectoplasm.

So - who will emerge the victor from this titanic struggle? Only four or five guys can decide! Some fun, huh?
Four or five of us don't have both of these, Throckmorton.
ReplyDeleteHere's how mixed-up I am. I've heard tons of BOC, though not the
ReplyDeletelive set in question. Meanwhile, I already have the Vashti Bunyan
album, but I haven't, erm, gotten around to playing it. Finally, I'm
about to head out to Joshua Tree, which isn't the same as Palm
Springs but is still pretty close. Please advise.
Dear Crab Devil
ReplyDeleteWhy not get Mom to pack you some delicious spinach n' strawberry sandwiches? The zesty tang makes for a refreshing and nutritious treat on that desert trek!

Be sure to hit Room 18 at the Joshua Tree Inn, where Gram Parsons bought lunch. The staff are very friendly and Donovan is there a lot. I find him very cool. Go see giant rock and the integratron and hit Pioneer Town if you have time. My favorite drive is Pipes Canyon where the road has an easement that goes underneath Donovan's kitchen window on one side and Ann Wilson, of Heart, scantily clad hanging her laundry on the other. Oh, I have Devendra too, listened to it once, and might again, the next time I listen to stuff like Incredible String Band at Woodstock or something. Requesting the new Stones 50 year anniversary release with a cake on the front.......Make it Bleed or something

Great advice, Mr. III, and thank you! You, too, FiveGunsWest,
ReplyDeleteonly I can't be seen anywhere near Ann's place since that
unfortunate misunderstanding of last time around.
Eh- can't stand cowbells, so no way I'll cast my vote for BOC. Not a fan of elf ecoplasm or Bunyan, but there is a bluesman from Mississipi, Vashti Jackson, that I really like, so, in his honor, I begrudgingly cast my aspersions, er I mean vote for Vashti. But, the real winner in this post are the RS.
ReplyDeleteGlad you picked up the stones en route, Mr Mac. I can't for the life of me tell the difference between this new remaster and the 1984 Original Master Recording. And the mono version - a fold-down - is a little meh, but the book is a good read. For the record - my fave band of all time.
DeleteLet It Bleed is one of my desert island discs. Mind you, I would need the entire Hawaiian Islands to fit all of those discs. Thanks for the RS and the other posts, Farq.
DeleteOh golly, Vashti will kick their respective tuchases back to Long Island with one flick of the reins of the pony pulling her cart to an undisclosed location in the Scottish Highlands. If not that, the Loch Ness monster will do the dirty work for her. Again.
ReplyDeleteDear Farquhar, Thank you for your insightful descriptions. They make voting so easy. Those nice Catholic boys from Palm Springs seem to have taken a wrong turn somewhere. I vote for Vashti. Dames have to stick together.
ReplyDeleteMsSusanM
PS Do I have to listen to the platters before voting?
Personally, I'd like to hear Vashti cover "She's as Beautiful as a Foot" accompanied by Andrew Oldham's harpsichord then everyone would be a winner. And, I recently found out that Vashti & Twice As Much's "Coldest Night of the Year" was originally recorded by (brother & sister!) Nino Tempo & April Stevens -- and that song seems to be the blueprint for Kenny Young's "Don't Go Out Into the Rain."
ReplyDeleteThe votes are in (actual listening isn't a requirement), and Vashti beats out Blue Oyster Cult. Can't say I'm surprised - I saw her working out with the heavy bag before the fight.
