Merrell Fankhauser's Mystic Clam Of Mu Dept.

In my wanderings in search of the strange, the weird, and the unearthly, the story of Merrell Fankhauser's Mystic Clam Of Mu ranks as one of the strangest, the weirdest, and the unearthliest [is this a word? - Ed.].  Come with me now into the realms of the strange, the weird, and the unearthly, as I recount a tale so strange, so weird, so unearthly I would scarcely give it creedence were it not for the fact I witnessed it with my own eyes! Kindly wishes, Your Host, Farquhar Throckmorton III

Lancelot "Lance" Steele was born in 1943 to Charles and Elizabeth Steele, respectively Professor Emeritus of Classical Literature at Yale, and first viola with the New York Philharmonic. As a young teen Lance developed a passion for rock and roll, but when he told his parents he wanted to quit high school to devote himself to his band Lancelot And The Knights, they would only allow it on one condition; he must change his name. Neither wanted the respected Steele family name associated with such a "transient vulgar fad".

Stately Steele Manor
With a mischievous sense of humor, his parents wrote unlikely names on slips of paper and asked young Lance to choose one from a top hat. The result, Merrell Fankhauser, should have been ridiculous enough to make him give up any idea of becoming a rock and roll star, but if anything it strengthened his resolve. The Impacts, once Lancelot And The Knights, now Merrell And The Exiles, moved to California where their wholesome good looks and happening teenbeat sounds soon garnered them a residency at prestigious Pismo Beach teen hangout The Clam House [later demolished to make way for MrDave's Fish Head Incinerator - Ed.].

From here, the story takes an almost unbelievable turn. In an interview with The Pismo Persuader, Merrell recounts the event that would change his life:

"We were taking a break from filming a scene for the new Fabian movie Teen Clambake From Mars, and I was walking along the oceanside when a giant glowing clam descended from the sky and spoke to me. It said Merrell, do some drugs, which to be honest I already was, but also Merrell, return to the lost continent of Mu, which I never heard of. And this glowing book like floated down from the clam, which had disappeared, and there it was on the sand next to a Thermos and a pair of huaraches. And a towel. The book [left - Ed.] felt strangely warm, like it fell out a glowing clam. I took it back to the movie set where I read it while Fabian learned his line, which was, gee whiz is this clam ever salty!"

The rest is history. Fabian became a lush and married a Bituminious Coal Queen. The Exiles changed their name to Fapardokly, a Muvian deity, and two of the band members changed their names to Drumbo and Antennae Jimmy Semens. They cut a half-assed album before changing their name to Merrell Fankhauser And His Trusty HMS Bounty and cutting a swell album before moving to Maui and changing their name to Mu and cutting a swell album which like the lost continent itself sank without trace, only to wash up decades later on Fabulous False Memory Foam Island©!

What have these albums in common?

  7. All you have to do is lie! Is that so very difficult? Say - "hey! I ticked all dem boxes awready! Where's me albums, ya doofus?" - something along those lines. Nobody's going to know if you ticked all the boxes or spent the time tweezering your nasal hair or picking your feet. In Poughkeepsie.

    3. Songkhla Steve showing the rest of youse bums up for a bunch of lily-livered Pollyannas.

Here's the first of a few: it's "The Maui Album" from '76, credited to Lance Steele, round about the time Randy California - another Muvian - was recording Spirit Of '76. The albums share a certain blissed-out feel, although this is better-produced and uses a full band (including some very nice violin from his old lady Mary Lee, jazzer Bill Berg on drums, and local unknowns on keys, bass and guitar). Things can get a little sappy - what do you expect? - but it's a strong album, good songs, variety, and Lance is in fine voice. Good vibes, man, if you can remember what they are, and we're all in need of a hit.

  9. Lest readers fret about the untimely demise of beloved teen hangout, The Clam House, to make way for the inevitable march of progress (hey, I'm not the one eating all these fishes!), be assured that many of the teens of yesteryear still congregate in festive makeshift enclaves on this hallowed ground after returning from their all expense paid vacations to beautiful Southeast Asia. It's not like they's got anywhere else to go -- it's a swell time around the trash barrel fires I tell you! (once you get used the smell that is). Come on down to the hootenanny and don't forget to bring your Isle o' Foam bonafide 4/5 Guy (none of us are the men we used to be are we?) 11. Youse bums still have weekends? When you "do stuff"? I haven't had a weekend since I moved out here somethingteen years ago. Every day is Saturday! But the visitor log at th' IoF© is always a tad bereft at weekends.

Here, for Songkhla Steve ("songkhla" is Thai for "potrzebie"), is the next Lance Steele album, and it's a beauty.
"Merrell Fankhauser And (His Trusty) H.M.S. Bounty" recorded "Things!" in '68, when it was released by the prestigious Shamley label just in time for the Christmas rush. Shamley - an offshoot of the prestigious Uni label, and shoots don't come further off than that, gave a contract to any bum who stumbled in off the street. Their publicity department was a secretary yelling out the window. Add to that Lance's chronic problem with nomenclature and ycleptivity ("Have you got Somethings by, uh, Merrell Somebody And (His Trusty) Whatever? Ah, fergeddit. Gimme the new Zager and Evans.") didn't boost sales, nor radio plays. Jocks didn't have the patience to announce it. Damn shame. you ax me. It's a swell album. Perfect blend of pop/psych/rock you'll find subtly addictive.

    2. Many of my friends still work full time, so often want to meet up on the weekends, if I can be bothered I will join them. To be honest Saturday nights out are not a priority anymore, I prefer a quiet night out during the week.
Also ‘doing stuff’ is mainly during the week too.

  12. Mu's self-titled album ["Mu" - Ed.], released in '71, is a high point in Lance's brobdignagian discography. It's one of those hard-to-categorise albums, but a comparison with Trout Mask Replica isn't, surprisingly, so very far off the mark. They share two core musicians - the guitar/drum patterns are immediately recognisable The difference is mood; where the Beefheart album is (in)tense to the point of breaking, Mu is more relaxed (but what isn't?). Play the first track, Ain't No Blues, and you're listening to the Magic Band shuffle through a Trout Mask outtake. The album limped out on RTV Records, an outfit that made Shamley look like Columbia. I doubt they even had an office. It eventually got a UK release in '75, which is when I picked it up, with a better cover. It is a fantastic piece of work, and the follow-up (The Last Album, included in the loaddown) ain't no slouch, either.
The difference between this and Things is extreme, a brave step for th' Fankster. He would return to Maui bliss for the Maui album (up there somewhere).

Grab this with both claws. It's a keeper.
