Shapeshifter Of Delight Dept.

The boundary between solo albums by Carlos Humberto Santana Barragán and band albums by Santana is blurred and tricky to negotiate. I avoid the problem by filing everything under Santana. Shape Shifter, 2012, might have lifted the "band albums" out of a ten-year creative rut, but it sold less than the previous Guitar Heaven, his absolute nadir, and the rut was soon slipped back into.

Shape Shifter is basically instrumental, a good start. The only vocal nicely prefigures the last Santana album anybody really needs, the underrated (because unapologetically Mexican, I'm guessing) Corazon. This is above all, a Swell Album, not exactly like any other in the canon, and will provide you, Mr. and Mrs. Consumer, with many hours of musical pleasure. New cover art [above - Ed.] to freshen things up a bit.

The Swing Of Delight, attributed to Devadip Carlos Santana, is three decades older [pause for quiet contemplation while we stare into the abyss of time - Ed.] but they make an interesting pairing. This is an entirely instrumental jazz album, with Chucky leading, and allowing his musicians (including Herbie Hancock, Waynie Shorter, Ronnie Carter, and Tony Williams) to strut their stuff. This doesn't sound exactly like a Santana album, either, even with his instantly recognisable playing and dialled-back Latin percussion. Like Shape Shifter, it's not quite the success we might have hoped, and the wild magic that inspired his incredible run from Abraxas to Borboletta is absent. But again, it's a Swell Album, so being too critical is, well, being too critical. Quit yer whinin' an' let the music play. New cover art features rare selfie of Krishna - hubba hubba! [left - Ed.].

  1. Any good series on TV? I just finished Mindhunter (second season slump syndrome victim) and I'm waiting for Severance S02 and White Lotus S03, and bailed on The Last Of Us. Need something binge-worthy!

    1. I'll second the recommendation of Lilyhammer.

Since you liked Severance... For All Mankind, Station Eleven, Dark, The Man In The High Castle, The Expanse and Foundation are also good ones if you haven't seen them all already.

    4. I just finished the first season of Black Mirror which is exactly as described -- a very dark reflection of where we are and where we are going. I have to take it in small doses as it is a bitter pill but so far very well done and rewarding if you can resist the urge to use the tube as a brief narcotic respite from the trials and tribulations of daily life.

Slow Horses was a great British old-school espionage series if you want to torrent it (Apple TV series).

I've been on a science documentary kick lately and have been enjoying Cosmos and The Secrets of Quantum Physics in my spare time lately.

  2. "Lilyhammer". All about a gangster in Lillehammer. Once I'd figured out that Miami Steve was involved, I knew Springsteen would pop up eventually.

  6. No time for binge watching here in busy Dorsetshire, but... I did see that CVC of Get Real, Foam featured - https://falsememoryfoam.blogspot.com/2023/01/sweet-jesus-this-is-so-luscious-my-mind.html#comment-form - have a top 20 vinyl album as featured on South Today (local TV news) and an expanded version with extra covers ep about to be released. Maybe the Foam Feature will get them playing Glastonbury festival this year too?

    1. The hype I gave the band here vaulted sales into double figures, they tell me. The power of the internet!

  8. I'm not a "binge watcher".

    Recent things I found interesting
'Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities'
    ‘The Lying Life of Adults’
    ‘1899’
    'Cunk on Earth'

Looking forward to the last episodes of 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' and 'Grace and Frankie'

  9. I find Diane Morgan who is Cunk, much funnier in Mandy, but most people I know love Philomena Cunk, I find it annoying.

  10. Wife swears by 'The Serpent' on Netflix, whilst a few months back I very much enjoyed Belgian cop show 'Undercover' on same channel. I am more likely to be surfing YT for old and new documentaries, or ITV-x/Britbox for 'Dr Who' stories I was too young to see or understand at the time, along with the defunct but thoroughly entertaining UK women's prison show 'Bad Girls'.

  11. Fond memories of The Wire, The Corner, and The Sopranos, but my favorite long-form TV is Narcos, in all its versions. None of these shows stiffed in the second season, either. Not sure I'd want to watch any of them again.
(Anybody want these Swell Albums? Just ax!)

    4. Swing has some great stuff on it, quite rightly given the calibre of people performing. The recent things by Mr "Shame On You, America", other than the Clive-Davis-driven heavy rotation singles, I'm unfamiliar with. I like the sound of 'Havana Moon' but have never heard it. He had some great album art back in the day.

    5. Havana Moon is still one of my favorite Santana albums + the title song is an amazing Chuch Berry cover!
