    2. Here we go Lopez. I'm a big fan of the late Tim Smith, English musician and songwriter. His music is very varied, but prog is in there. This is a radio show celebrating his life, even if you know his wonderful music with Cardiacs there are plenty of other projects explored in this show. I'd be interested to know if you like what you hear, it's not always an easy listen, but well worth it.

  9. EXCITING RAP
Most white gentlemen of a certain age, when talking about music, usually say something along the lines of "I like all music except Rap"

Be that as it may, here's two, that if you give them a chance, you will be rewarded with an entertaining and fun listen. I triple dog dare you.

    1. No triple dog dare necessary. Maybe because I'm not "of a certain age" yet and listened to rap when I was, ahem, young...er. "The Miseducation Of..." was a great gateway record even when it came out for people who 'didn't get rap' and is arguably as much soul- as rap-influenced. Great record that I never spin regularly enough, but this is a good reminder to do so.

Paul's Boutique, like all Beastie Boys, I never listened to, but will remedy. Thanks.

    2. I like all music except rap. And some other stuff. But I like most music. I'm pretty broad minded. Able to appreciate a lot of different-type music. Well, a bunch of it, some of it. The stuff I like, I *like* - know what I mean? I'm pretty discriminating. You have to be. What I like is - well, let's say I'm a connoisseur. I like the best music. Certain type of music, I can listen to any time. I have over thirty CDs. Oh, I don't have time to play 'em all - I'm a busy guy! But I have this one CD in the car that I listen to *a lot*. What's that one band with "can you put your head in your hands OH NO"

    3. I think you are pushing the bounds of credibility by even considering it music. Its largely simplistic poetry

    4. Seriosly tho' folks - rap is perhaps the only genre with a value judgement attached to not liking it. You don't like rap? Are you a "white gentleman of a certain age"? I don't like it (and I am an old white dude), but I don't like quite a few genres of music, mainly because they just don't engage me. "Not liking" rap (or polka, or classical, or free jazz, or bierkeller oompah, or Tuvan throat singing, or black metal, or whatever) is neutral. The act of "not liking" doesn't create any negativity, any bad feelings. The music just fails to reach me. No blame attached to it or me. But not liking rap does tend to get you classified as "conservative in your tastes" - possibly with a big C - in a way that not liking (say) computer game music doesn't. No, I don't like rap. I've given it my best shot, with my openest ears, over decades of good intent and in the context of a general love of and interest in music, and it still hasn't made any connection with me. I have my suspicions that some people (none of the 4/5g©, natch) claim to like it because they think that they should, that not liking it would show them to be conservative. There's a little pressure in that direction.

    5. Rick Rubin (Def Jam) who produced LL Cool J and Run-DMC, said in a meeting with Colombia Records, that people in some places in America were resistant to these bands because they were black, and suggested that The Beasty Boys, would get played and accepted in those places. He was proved right, Licensed to Ill, was a big hit, despite Rubin thinking it would only appeal to a small group. And guess what, it was the first rap album this white boy ever heard. Thanks Babs, I’ll give Paul's Boutique a spin.

Slightly off topic. Justin Bieber has sold the rights to his publishing and artist royalties from his song catalog, in a deal valued at $200 million according to Billboard. Springsteen also recently sold his rights. Springsteen’s deal was worth about $550 million. Neither of these musicians I’m really into, however I recognize that Springsteen wrote and performed some great stuff, and made iconic albums. Bieber music I have heard, but it just doesn’t do anything for me, probably because I’m too old. Anyway surely Bieber got a fantastic deal there, or am I missing something?

Uh...I think most poets would probably not be on board with that description either.

  11. I'll take TEARFUL EMO for $1.000, please.

So, by the time this came out they weren't even really EMO anymore, though, really, since it's hardly a really well defined genre who fuckin' knows...

This is a stone-cold genre classic by any label.

  13. WHOLESOME BIG BAND
Can't say I've ever heard the words wholesome and big band in the same sentence.
Some Big Band from two titled Gentlemen, and by titled, I mean a Count and a Duke.

MB is my all time Funkadelic release (although Parliament - Up on The Down Stroke is a close second - "All My Goodies are Gone" being my all-time #1). Thaks Babs

  17. Phantom Of The Rock OperaJanuary 25, 2023 at 6:44 AM

The sheer lack of rock genres (punk and grunge barely count) in that list makes it the musical equivalent of an alfalfa shoot restauraunt. Simply put "Where's The Beef?"

  20. I mentioned the Nico/Tangerine Dream concert fiasco at Notre Dame de Reims Cathedral in the Velvet Underground For Girls page.

I'd say the TD set falls in the SPOOKY AMBIENT category, perhaps with a touch of MAXIMIZED RHYTHMS. And when you consider that the performance was entirely improvised and that this concert got them officially excommunicated by the Catholic church (really!), listening to it today might even qualify it as DEFIANT JAZZ.

If you want your ambiance to maximize its spooky defiance, you can listen to it here:
