Godlike Genius Dept. - Blue Lawns

Here's
a couple of sweet companions to familiar albums from Joni Mitchell. The Seeding Of Summer Lawns is an unusually intelligently produced bootleg. Hunter has been removed because it's from the Blue sessions, and is included on ...

Blue Highlights.
A recent Record Store Day special, culled from Archives Vol. II.

Thanks to Lupine Assassin.

Rolling Stone [a magazine - Ed.] said that Summer Lawns was "Uninspired ... insubstantial."

"Basically a West Coast Erica Jong. If that sounds peachy to you, enjoy." smirked Roberta Christgau, who opined that Blue was "an exciting, scary glimpse of a woman in a man's world." Just what is his problem?

  6. We live in a time that seems to be going from bad to worse, but humans have felt like we are getting to end times for centuries. I hope in a few years we can look back on the past three years an say "well, it wasn't as bad as we thought". I hope.

As for nostalgia, how about space travel? :-)

    1. For those people wondering who Christgau is, here's some pdfs of his volumes of album reviews.
You may wish to consider discussing blood pressure meds with your doctor after reading some of his reviews.
      The guy's an obnoxious prick.

    2. I think I'll give this Christgau chap a miss thanks - I know my opinions are correct, whatever Christgau may think.

    3. Or there's his web site, which is like wandering into a forgotten city, built in the first days of the internet.

    4. Is it still there in that state? It looks like something GeoCities coughed up like a hairball.

    5. Received wisdom from rock music snob-critics: we need their views like we need haemorrhoids.

    6. Awww, leave the old man alone, will ya?. The only question that matters is, was he right about the best album of 1994 being the Latin Playboys? I think we can all agree he was right about that. In fact, I'm going to give that a listen later and save the "Blue" outtakes for a day when I want to feel really, really bad.

    7. To be fair, he was right about that. You've changed my mind. He's brilliant.

    2. and i the opposite. Imagine this woman, untamed and subtely aware you've just dropped in the bar where she's playing with her songs, taking them just further than she'd ever been.

    3. That's a great way of looking at it, but unfortunately I can't respond to anonymous comments. Nope.

    1. For a moment I'd thought I'd forgotten to hit "publish" again. Some wonderful rants have been lost that way over the last thirty years. :)
