Hal proved that making albums overflowing with fantastic, hooky songs just ain't enough. Nor is great singing and playing, apparently. Nor is a sparkling, lush, full production. What does it take? Beats me. Here's a couple of swell long-playing record albums that'll have you sobbing "I give up! The world is nuts!"
From Ireland, with a distinctly West Coast pop vibe, this is gorgeous, seemingly effortless music that'll make you despair of the biz called show.
You want? Of course you want. You're not dumb like those other guys.
ReplyDeletei remember reading about 'Play The Hits' when it came out, and tracked down the import cd, and MAN, such great stuff..................
ReplyDeleteBand names are important. These guys chose theirs poorly.
ReplyDeleteYup. And they put shit covers on their albums, too, which didn't help.
DeleteYes but they put themselves to the fullest possible use, which is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do..........
DeleteI could see your lips move ...
DeleteI feel much better now. I really do.
DeleteAs soon as I saw the name, I thought it was some some of Kubrick tribute band. "I'm sorry, Dave. I can't do that."

Bienvenue a l'Isle de Mousse©, Alain from France! Je suis accro aux Engrenages et passionnément amoureux de Maitre Karlsson - pouvez-vous me présenter?
DeleteNice Pop that wears its influences on its sleeve, but doesn't rip it off.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of Neil Finn. He has/had a band called Crowded House. Also released an album with his brother Tim, aptly entitled Finn Brothers.
DeleteHAL are basically a melodic band, and so are (e.g.) Crowded House, but their roots stretch back to late sixties U.S. harmony pop, and they don't share the Finn brothers' melancholy, which I've never found attractive but got them beaucoup critical credit back in the day (as glumness tends to do - critics like seriousness and suffering). Taking Sad Pop to its extremes gets you to The Smiths and other U.K. miserabalists, and no thanks. HAL are more aligned to Supergrass and The Thrills, but more skilled than either.
DeleteSupergrass......... "Now that's a name I have not heard in a long, long time."
DeleteI'll admit it's not as catchy a name as Pugwash.
ReplyDeletePugwash? File under: Boring Blokes, alongside Squeeze.

ReplyDeleteI had some tracks from....probably Mojo, UNCUT, or Paste...the cds that came with music mags...and recall I liked everything I heard by HAL. I'll check these out.
