Hans-Adam II, Prince of Liechtenstein, Talks About The Continued Importance Of The Nation-State As A Political Actor And Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks

You'll know Hans-Adam II [full name Johannes Adam Ferdinand Alois Josef Maria Marco d'Aviano Pius - Ed.], Prince of Liechtenstein [full title Prince of Liechtenstein, Duke of Troppau and Jägerndorf, Count of Rietberg, Sovereign of the House of Liechtenstein- Ed.] from his outspoken views on the continued importance of the nation-state as a political actor, but few know of his enthusiasm for Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks! That's right! Boyishly handsome Hans-Adam [left - Ed.] has been a fan since the early days of the Charlatans! But first, let's hear what he has to say about the continued importance of the nation-state as a political actor - take it away, Hans!

"Firstly, my thanks are due to Farquhar Throckmorton III for allowing me to use th' Isle O' Foam© to make my argument for the continued importance of the nation-state as-"

(Cries of Whipping Post! from audience, tape ends abruptly) Sorry, Hans, that's all we have time for! Five swell long-players today, pals!

EDIT: Hugh Candyside (whose Foley work in Herbie Goes Bananas garnered an Oscar nom) supplies the missing It Happened One Bite in the comments.

    1. Happy holidays to you, sir! Stay safe and healthy.

I dunno much about Dan Hicks. Decades ago I heard his album "It Happened One Bite" and I still get the song "Crazy 'Cause He Is" stuck in my head. "He's a questionnaire with no questions there..."

  2. All I ever really knew about Hicks was his version of Hot Rod Lincoln. But, it was a damn good cut. Now, if you wanna go to the Squirrel Nut Zippers, boy there's some stories to tell......but, the statute of limitations has not tolled.

  3. Dan Hicks is delightful, hot licks or no. Someone may have stolen his Santa Claus suit, but I'm hoping for a link anywho...

As for nation-states in the age of authoritarian revanchism, it's actually kinda hard to find one that actually is (Japan? But the Ainu. Finland? But the Sámi) and _if_ states are waning(ish) in importance, nations remain unable to form a state much less affect the international system in any meaningful way, shape, or form... pity the Kurds, Palestinians, and per Maddy Prior, the night porter.

Sorry, until this year for six years in a row I had to teach Comparative Politics every semester. Nasty, boring, intellectually dead bidness.

  6. In the early 70s my pregnant wife and I were living in Big Sur. Once a week we drove up to Monterey in kind of a camper, an old Dodge we'd built a 2nd story onto. It was extremely non-aerodynamic, the coastal winds caused it to rock back and forth along Highway 1, and for some reason we only had one cassette. "Where's the Money." My wife still experiences morning sickness listening to it.

"It Happened One Bite" does not produce the same effect.

    2. Thanks for the sweet bite of candy, Hugh! "It Happened One Bite" was in a college friend's LP collection. She also turned me onto NRBQ.

  9. Mara Liasson on NPR:

“You know, Trump has mused privately about running in 2024. He's setting up a super PAC that would fund his expenses for that...But, you know, the debate about what is Trumpism post-Trump has been going on since 2016, but it can't really continue as long as Trump is on the stage. You know, it's - there's that old country music song - how can I miss you when you won't go away?”

Apparently a 1967 Dan Hicks tune now qualifies as an “old country music song.”

    1. hahaha...tbh, I use that line all the time, not least with students... people always laugh as if I don't mean it...

    2. Well, at least Mara's citing in the right spirit!

The fact is that I only started appreciating DH after I understood not to try pigeonholing him. Meanwhile, what Eric says reminds me not only of the better part of my own teaching philosophy but also of something from Flannery O'Connor: “Everywhere I go I’m asked if I think universities stifle writers. I think they don’t stifle enough of them."

But thanks, Farq and Hugh, and Happy Holidays to all.

    3. O'Connor's line is a good one...I fear my meager contributions to the academy would've been better off stifled...

  11. Had dinner a few summers back at Bergrestaurant Sareiserjoch in Malbun. Hans-Adam II may have been at the next table. If only I had known he was Dan Hicks fan, we could have discussed Dan's finer points over schnapps and Cohiba Esplendidos.

Happy Holidays to The Four Or Five Guys©, and a special thank you to Mr. Throckmorton for he does for us bums.

  12. For some years in the 1970s, Hicks ran an ad for the band in the Marin County (California) Yellow Pages, under the "Party Supplies" heading.

Best wishes for a large dose of good things over the holidays and the coming year for all those upon the Isle© as well as the cintingent beyond the foamy shore.

  15. I feel like Johannes Adam Ferdinand Alois Josef Maria Marco d'Aviano Pius, Prince of Liechtenstein, Duke of Troppau and Jägerndorf, Count of Rietberg, Sovereign of the House of Liechtenstein's thoughts on the subject of Nation States as Political actors in the age of trans-national corporate entities may be more important to your readers than the distracting toe-tapping rhythms of these Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks sides and you are doing a disservice to the global community by abruptly cutting o ...
