Thirty Minutes Dept. - To Slumberland - Slight Return


This took me, uh, like, gee ... a while. It's refreshingly different, yet the signature qualities of the other Thirty Minute curatorial initiatives are present in abundance, to whit: a commitment to entertainment excellence in on-time deliverables, with consumer satisfaction prioritized to the max! And that's the FoamGuarantee© of a swell time!

If you enjoyed the others, you'll enjoy this half as much as I did! If the whole concept leaves you meh, well, that's cool too, dude! It's your trip, and, cordially, fuck you!

You'll recognise maybe a couple of sources, but it will prove a mildly diverting thirty minutes nonetheless. I'll provide a Gemstone File later for your elucidatory cognisance.

  2. The Wizard's Sleeve pub, Nether Frotting, Bucks, UK, reminds me of a wonderful afternoon in 1988 spent in their lovely snug bar with my fellow casketeers, I believe we drank one too many pints of "Clergymans Knob", a dark but very quaffable rum stout.

    2. In the UK you can buy 'Brewdog Rattle & Rum', a rum and chocolate flavoured stout beer, very strong.

  3. The latest Thirty Minutes is great, for the first time I recognise one of the tracks, good to hear the 'Cambridge song', even though it's by one of the biggest bands ever. The sax and tabla at beginning and end is rather splendid too.

    This project has driven me to the edge of madness - endless nights in this ancient gambrelled house looming over the dark Miskatonic, my haggard face bathed in the unnatural radiance of the computer screen as I wrestle with eldritch sonic dæmons summoned from the Pit of Memory! And for what? So Four Or Five Guys© can pass a half hour in blessed respite from their mean, haunted lives.

    Perhaps I should enter once more into Slumberland? Why not? There are certain ... details ... that could perhaps ... but wait! Hist and hark!! There is no time!! The gibbering ululations of the Elder Gods echo from the blasphemous pit!! They come!! They come!!! NYARLATHOTEP!! YOG-SOTHOTH!! THE PORTAL OPENS!!!

    3. Ok, will give the directors cut a spin.
      I replayed my Thirty Minutes With Psilly Psymon last night, and spotted a couple of bits that could be improved (the opening song goes on a bit too long, but I'll not be redoing it. Sorry if you gave up because of that). Might do a brand new one in a few weeks.

    4. That was basically the problem with this one - using the entire Cambridge Song was just too much, so I cut it in half. It's always better to edit wherever possible.

    5. I may do an update on mine as well. Kinda varies depending on speakers vs car vs headphones, but the general mix at the end has always hit me as needing improvement.

      Great job on yours, Bambi! It's really cool to have a Thirty Minutes of a different musical style and decade.

    6. Thanks Torgo, 00's pop star Bat for Lashes (Natasha Khan) did the vocal on the last track, based on a Moroccan song from the 1970's, an ideal closing track I thought.

    7. I'll add that Bambi and I now have a special appreciation for Farq's comment, having succumbed to madness ourselves by weaving our music selections into story lines. But I have to say it was well worth it. Sanity is overrated anyway.

      For anyone else among the 4/5 thinking about putting a Thirty Minutes piece together, go for it! The audio editing program Audacity really is all you need for software, and it's free.

    There’s a lot of synchronicity happening here: Clemons’ bass line slowing and mutating into Carla Bruni’s bass line, the "day" link between Donovan and Caravan, the Pitch Black beats syncing with Caravan, Steve Miller blending into Ligeti, and HAL’s song being completed by the first few notes of Milla Jovovich, but the most jaw-dropping sync was the final track. The Clemons original sounded a little empty for this project, so I snipped out the required length at random from the Great Pyramid album and slid it in. To my amazement, it fits exactly, with no editing, like it was recorded in the same studio at the same time. All that intuitive call-and-response, with Horn weaving around Clemons simple lines, never happened. Horn’s vocals at the end, perfectly in tune, end the piece on a supernatural high. Zappa invented this technique, calling it Xenochrony, but here it just happened. Clemons and Horn playing spare and meditative music decades and continents apart, yet together in spirit, in perfect tune and time. “Supernatural? Perhaps. Baloney? Perhaps not.”

    1. Great stuff, Farq, really enjoyed the 30 minutes, which quickly turned into 4/5 hours. Now I need to search out the full albums from Clarence Clemons, Carla Bruni and especially Milla Jovovich- can't get enough of her section. Thank you kindly, sir.

    3. I thought I recognised Cocteau Twins when I first listened. Wow a lot more ‘clever stuff’ went into making Slumberland than I realised, back-masked and xenochrony stuff, mmmnn (scratches head).
      I think I understand what you did with the 'empty' Clemons track, that does make sense to me.

    RIP Randy Meisner.

    By all accounts one of the nicest guys in the music business. Also, terminally shy and unwilling to be in the spotlight, which no doubt aided and abetted in getting hosed by his soon-to-be-former bands.

      While still in his teens, Meisner married his childhood sweetheart, Jennifer Barton (they would divorce in 1981), and set about making a living as a musician. He formed a band called the Dynamics, then played with numerous groups across the midwest before being asked to join the Soul Survivors. They headed for California to seek their fortune, but found the going tough. The band fell apart and Meisner assembled a new outfit, which he aptly named the Poor. They recorded several singles for the Loma, York and Decca labels, without success.

      Then Meisner was recruited to the country-rock band Poco being formed by the Buffalo Springfield veterans Jim Messina and Richie Furay. Poco immediately signed with Epic Records after their rousing debut at the Troubadour club in Los Angeles in November 1968, but Meisner became disillusioned when Messina and Furay treated him as a mere hired hand. When they would not allow him to attend mixing sessions for the band’s debut album, Pickin’ Up the Pieces (1969), a peeved Meisner promptly quit. In the painting of the band on the album sleeve, he was replaced by a dog.
