I'll Just Leave This Here Dept.

While I finish the screed for my major op-ed think-piece on Michael McDonald, let's put this up, because it's swell. Torgo's Thirty Minutes reminded me of it, but I was surprised by its absence here. Thus, this. Pretty damn sublime, and if anyone has Mentor Williams' solo album from  '74 ... ?

    1. Farq, how tremendous Thou Art!

Just about two hours ago I had the joy of having heard their full album for the 1st time (and 2nd) ever (on Y'Choob) & my, do I love it. Those afraid of cluttering up potentially redundant stuff on their drives can check this 'ere link first- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQTideaVaUA Ya won't be sorry, folks!
Once more kudos to Torgo, too.

I have a vague memory, of The Holy Mackerel in one of those "figure out the album" contests we used to have here. You know, where the album cover was blurred, or it popped out of a trash can or something. We couldn't name the album, but we had to leave a clue.

  2. This is the one with the mega-creepy seaside town. (And the calendars read "Live in peace, 1984"). It's the last song on the regular album.

  3. Also, if you haven't been to the Thirty Minutes thread for a while, I went ahead and named the other included songs and posted more goodies.

    1. Don't you worry, Torgo. It's a very popliar and alive piece. Nobody's missing it.

  4. Here's 'Here Comes Inspiration' from 1974, and 'Life Goes On', from 1972.

I think I may have more on vinyl in the archives.

    1. Thanks for these Paul Williams albums, Babs! I'm listening to his bro Mentor's album on yewchewb, and it's a must have. I can download and split the tracks, but it would be nice to have a direct rip from the album.

    2. Off to the archives, it might be near that big crate, Spielberg left.

    3. I can find vinyl by Andy Williams, "Big" Joe Williams, Cootie Williams, Deniece Williams, Don Williams, Hank Williams, Joe Williams, John Williams, Lenny Williams (from Tower of Power), Lucinda Williams, Mary Lou Williams, Robbie Williams, Robert Pete Williams, Robin Williams, Tony Williams, Vanessa Williams and Wendy O. Williams. I even have The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra playing some Ralph Vaughan Williams, but alas, no Mentor, even though Excel claims I have it.
      Hmmmm....

    4. Maybe sitarswami can help - it's the kind of thing he'd have in the back of a crate.

    5. Sorry, I've never run across Mentor's lp. Now, if you're lookin' for Roger Nichol's Small Circle of Friends ...

  5. They certainly are a cute bunch of rascals -- looks like they're still in high school. Thanks!

  7. Just a bit of background for everyone who isn't familiar with this album... yes, the person second from left in the photo is Paul Williams, the same one who wrote songs like We've Only Just Begun for The Carpenters and Rainbow Connection for The Muppets and who played Little Enos in the "Smokey And The Bandit" movies.

He struggled to find work as a songwriter or musician or as an actor in his mid-twenties and was close to giving up and moving on to "real life". A producer who liked his work said he wanted to record an album with Williams, so he and his brother assembled a band.

The album took a while to record, and the group went through a few lineup changes during the recording process. And once it was done, they had pretty much all gone their separate ways even before it was released. So it was just as well the album went nowhere, as there would have been no band to tour to support it anyway.

But the experience gave Williams a renewed confidence as a songwriter, and you pretty much know how the story goes from there.

    1. You missed a pretty major role in De Palma's cult movie Phantom Of The Paradise, '74, for which he wrote the score. Big in Winnipeg!

(Nice scruffy old vinyl rip, with scruffy old cover - this had some plays!)

    1. Torgo disagree with premise! The second Sweet Country Red (track # 6) is really L.A. Cowboy.

Thanks for taking the time to split this up!

    2. You're right, consarn it! I'm not at my best doing this tagging stuff. Or anything else, really.
