The Last Of Them Dept.

There have been a few attempts to create a companion album to the Zombies' Odessey & Oracle, including the official Into The Afterlife, but they don't get spun much on th' Isle O' Foam™, mainly for the K4 reasons: (lack of) Kohesiveness, Koncision, and Kwality Kontrol. I've been tinkering with - wupes, *curating* - this collection for what seems like years. I finally drove myself to complete it by coming up with a title, which is damn clever *shit-eating grin*, and this here cover design [above - Ed.], which I'm confident you'll agree is the most beautiful sleeve design, like, ever. But enough of your praise.

Is the album a lost classic, as good as Odessey & Oracle? Of course it ain't, ya doofus. Very few albums are. But in common with similar IoF© sorcery summoning up UK pop-psych albums from a non-existent past [Nirvana, Hollies, Small Faces, Donovan- Ed.], it's an album you'll be proud to play when unexpected guests drop by! And why not set out a few gay paper plates of Twiglets™ [left - Ed.] for th' freeloadin' bums bargin' into your house wit' you in yer BVDs? These toothsome n' tasty snack-sticks make for mouthwatering munching at any informal social gathering, be it barbecue or bris, brunch or bare-knuckle fist fight! Yes, what could be more appetising than these sticky, over-salty, mud-colored, knobbly little by-products of the pig food industry? Who the freaking fuck sees a tin of Twiglets© at their local store and says "mmm! Twiglets®! Take my money!" What a world we live in. I can't make head nor tail of it. Uh ... what were we talking about?

  1. Snax. The Ritz crackers you get here are but a pale shadow of their former glory; they ain't as salty, as puffed-up and crisp, and you can't satisfyingly split them into a pair of matching discs with your thumbnail. Also, Siam is home to the weirdest seafood horror snacks you'll see outside a Wuhan wet market.

    3. Thanks for this - please remember to sign your anonymous comments with a nick!

As his blog isn't searchable, here's the link:

He had different parameters. I like Rod Argent's singing, I wanted "She's Not There" there, and I don't consider the instrumental B-side "Conversation Off Floral Street" an album choice. But as always, his remixing is master-class stuff!

  2. In the unlikely event you don't have Odessey n' Oracle, here it is (no bonus tracks - they'll appear on Omen n' Illiad):

    4. Beer and Twiglets, even better.

    5. Being vegetarian, I don't do Moo Dad Deaw. That said, Thao Kae Noi hot & spicy crispy seaweed from Thailand goes nice with a frosty brew.

  4. Genesis were fond of Twiglets, see rare Belgium tv performance, of single B side, Twiglet Alehouse from 1972.

  5. Since I don't venture out much I settle for the Schwartz Brothers Bakery Organic Everything Bagel Chips they stock at CostCo.

Beautiful cover btw -- it's deserving of all the hype that's been trending on TicToc recently. Where can I pick up a copy for the mantel?

  6. I like a Twiglet, although I'd rip your face off for a can of Cheese Footballs...

  8. Here's the synchronistically anorthographic Omen & Illiad, which sounds like a swell album to me:

  9. Thanks for the future memories of long pasts I missed out on until now. Babs' file is, as usual, intimidatingly large and monolith-opaque.

Speaking of which, seeing the classic LP titled 'Odd' on Workupload reminded me of my dear old mum's charming habit of mangling titles - 'Goodfellas' became 'The Good Fellows', 'Dances With Wolves' became 'Dancing With The Wolves' and when I asked her to record Kubrick's '2001' on VHS for me the resulting tape bore a skew-wiff handwritten label "Odd 2000".

    1. I've just had a listen Farq, and like it, Colin Blunstones voice is wonderful. I discovered O&O when a hippy guy (friend of the family, 10 years my senior) invited me to pop round and borrow some LP's. Even though I'd never heard the Zombies, O&O was one that I borrowed and taped, I just liked the cover.

Thanks, I wish more people would give feedback on stuff they download. I know I sometimes take days/weeks to get round to listening sometimes, so any feedback would be a page or two back and 'lost'.

    3. Like Bambi mentioned it's not always easy to find time to listen, but I did play it while doing some work and am sorry to admit only noticed that suddenly there was no more music... Just to absorbed in whatever I was doing, so I must give it another spin...

    4. I'm more interested in talking about the Zombies than this specific collection. O&O is not so much underrated as forgotten - when it's remembered, it's given the credit it's due, as one of perhaps the very greatest sixties pop albums, a beautiful piece of work. But it got lost on release, especially in the US. As recording started in '67, perhaps the cover looked just a little old-fashioned by the time it was released in April '68 - and the psychedelic artwork didn't really represent the baroque harmony arrangements and traditional song structures of the music. Putting this collection together has made me appreciate O&O again.

    5. Not exactly the view from my veranda which overlooks the lovely green field that used to be the 6th hole of a golf course before it went bankrupt 20 years ago but just a short bike ride into the state forest that my neighborhood abuts. This would be a fine hard stool for "not meditating" if it weren't for the bugs, gators, snakes and bears: https://imgur.com/a/NMe0JIE

  12. I am Ken, a regular reader of your blog with my first cup of coffee in the morning who still lives in a world where the Zombies, Small Faces, and the like still rule. You did such a great job on the Small Faces and Hollies I wanted to check out your Nirvana mix.
