ZZ Top - Everything You Want PLUS! Nothing You Need Dept.

Is this you?

The CD Era was a time of wonders. I disposed of most of my disposable income buying CD duplicates of my vinyl collection, which had already disposed of most of my disposable income. Why? Because I was a damn fool, in retrospect. But I wasn't alone in being duped into stacking up the nasty, sharp-edged items of office equipment with their stupid "jewel boxes" and flimsy illegible "inserts" and functionally ugly "label designs". I think I hated the damn things from the start but went on buying them because I was earning stupid money and had a Hugo Boss suit and a company Peugeot 1.9 GTI. Make stupid money, buy stupid stuff! I never felt so alive! New albums became obligatory CD purchases as vinyl dried up. And then the music industry suckered us into buying CD duplicates of music we already had on CD. Remastered with extra tracks! Limited edition miniature card sleeves! Oboyoboyoboy! TAKE MY MONEY!! Never mind that the vast majority of the "bonus" tracks were demo, live and alternate versions that did nothing to enhance the album, I wanted them! BOX SETS!! Gimme two, so I can keep one sealed!

Airbrush, cursed forerunner of AI

Talking of box sets, what we have here is one of the worst examples of Sucker CD ever issued, a remixed set of the first six ZZ Top albums [left - Ed.]. This might - just - have been a valid exercise if the remixes hadn't replaced the original mixes, which you couldn't buy anymore. It got a righteous kicking from those sharp-eared enough to notice it deserved one. As egregious as Zappa's '84 butchery of Money/Lumpy, the remix was an attempt to sound contemporary. In that, it's entirely successful, because in '87 contemporary music sounded like shit. Inevitably, there's now a critical reassessment along the lines of "it's just different". Er ... so was Zappa's '84 Money/Lumpy twofer.

Kustom sleeve, only at IoF©!

Rhino (we're supposed to type "the good people at" in front of that, but I refuse, because I'm a rebel, me) eventually made up for it with a box of original mixes, Chrome, Smoke & BBQ in '03. The Four Or Five Guys© are encouraged to make their own minds up as to which they prefer. I'd suggest comparing the two versions of Tush initially, and if you think the Six Pack version is better, that's fine. All opinions are equally respected and welcome, and we are nothing if not a broad church. Just never, never, paddle your coracle over to th' IoF© ever, ever again.

Note ZZ Top fan, bottom right. When you finish eyeing her chest puppies.

This post scrimshawed on a narwhal's tusk by a Esquimeau as part of th' IoF©'s cultural appropriation outreach program. Write for details.

  1. To get this cornucopium of largessity, simply state which of the following I actually did:

    a) Broke into Nick Cave's house
    b) Played a genuine Stradivarius violin insured for 2m. GBP
    c) Attended a private viewing of the Mona Lisa with three other people
    d) Joined The League Of Ovaltineys
    e) Sang on a Chuck Berry record

  6. It’s got to be the My Ding-a-Ling audience with Chuck Berry.

When CDs arrived I had just moved out of my parents house, and had bought a relatively expensive record player for my own place. Consequently I didn’t have much spare cash, and it was quite a few years till I bought a CD player, and when I did was unimpressed. But the other side of this was some people were happy to get rid of those big shelf filling records, and I was eager to buy them up. Bambi Mansions is overfilled with records, but not many CDs’.

  7. Please let it be "Joined The League Of Ovaltineys". SPx

  8. It's quite obvious from reading of your posting - you are officially felonious after sledgehammering yer way into Nick Cave abode (mayhap one of his pied a terres, seeking to 'get the goods' on him). Unless, of course, I've totally misread the information (highly probable according to sources near me). I hereby claim access to the cornucopium, albeit in faint hope achieving such. PS: are the Ugly Pills having the desired effect?

    Men have named you
You are so like the lady with the mystic smile 🎶

  10. Nobody's got the right answer yet, and I'm off for my evening stroll before the sun sets, and then I'll have a nice warm milky drink, button up my onesie and be slumbering the moment my curly head hits the pillow! Guess harder!

  11. A to E mentioned, but maybe the details on E were wrong? You attended a recording session!

  12. Attended a private viewing of the Mona Lisa with three other people ???
just how private is that ??? it should've just you and the Mona Lisa now that's private

  14. You broke into Nick Cave's house or had the fella from your most recent book--what of that, OBTW--break in for you. But it oughta be The League Of Ovaltineys

  15. also, where do you obtain your narwhal tusks? The "unicorns of the sea" are sparse around these parts, if a tad more likely than in the Greater Lower Colorado River Authority Wetlands Resource Area & Balcones Escarpment we escaped from. Scrimshawed's a good word

  17. pmac ("pmcartney" - you didn't know one of th' 4/5g© was a last remaining Beatle?) got it right. I done did all those things except play the violin - I just held it for a while. No weight to it at all, like it would float away. And I didn't break into Nic Cave's house, it was Nic Cage. Didn't notice the mistake until just now. And it wasn't his house - he was renting it from Gore Vidal. And I was with the (nameless) H'wood producer who broke in, retrieving a script he had claims to. But otherwise, it all happened. I don't remember how the private view happened, a friend of a friend, but yup. And I am on My Ding-a-Ling, and I am an Ovaltiney, although my badge and book are long gone. "Would you like a song or story?"

  18. Gawd. That ZZ Top set is horrific. Tres Hombres is one of the first records I ever bought so I know every second of it. Billy wrecked it, adding eliminator bullsht to it made me want to barf. It took a couple years to find files of the original versions. Now i'm mad at Billy...again!

  19. This here's the link to everything. If you compare one track from the Six Pack to the original from Chrome, Smoke & BBQ, you might want to trash the whole revoltin' set. Go ahead, it's what I'm doing.

  20. Hmm .. a bit late to the show (as ever!!) .. but as I read through the comments, I was thinking "non of the above" then "all of the above" .. wrong again!! Next time I'll go for "other"!!!

  21. Donkey years ago I remember reading that the Lanchester Arts Festival organizers (where Chuck did his ding-a-ling-thing) tried to claim royalties for the audience participation...
ZZ Top must be in the air as OBG recently posted about them as well!

  22. I have owned just one ZZ Top lp in m life - Rio Grande Mud. Thought it was ok, but maybe played it completely twice before the cassette gods decided to gobble the tape to shreds. To this day, I am in gratitude to the cassette gods.

  23. Well, I'm a rebel, so i akshually looked for that Sixpack set because those 80s sounding ZZ Pop are my ZZ Top.

I'm not trying to convince or convert anyone, though. Different folks, different strokes and all that.

At least as far as Tush is concerned, I know Babs is with me...

    2. As to "different", I think I covered that. As to sharing Tush with Babs ...

    3. The plesure of adding ambiguity to my sentence was all mine. Not that I go around talking tush (or Tush) with women I barely know...or women I know for that matter...

  24. I bought the 6-pack cuz it wuz supposed to sound better (& did have more "bottom" to it, I thought), plus I got it for half-price thru whatever record/cd club I was with at the time. I later downloaded the Rhino set, and went with it, instead. Had to have 'em after seeing them live right after Rio Grande Mud came out. (Tix were $3,4 & 5). All I remember is that they stretched most tunes to about 10-15 minutes cuz the didn't have that many tunes yet (or beards), but I loved it!

    1. I think the Rhino set came close to the original LPs, but if you've got "their earliest days" stuff, please bring it on! I've lived near La Grange for many years, BTW. A-haw-haw-haw...

I was never impressed with CDs and it took roughly 20 years for me to be lured away from vinyl to CD and I only did so in the early noughties because the supply of new vinyl had pretty much come to an end and buying second hand vinyl had become increasingly expensive. Gone were the days when you could go to a Boot Fair at a civilised time and find plenty of vinyl of interest as by 2000 the fairs would be mobbed by vinyl dealers from 7 am. Hopeless for someone like me who has never been an early riser so I switched to CD and now apart from the very occasional exception I'll stick with CD for the simple reason you can find just about any album reissued you'd like to name, there is far more availability, more durability, less of a storage requirement and generally you get far more bang for your buck. They also act as a back up for media you keep on your PC.

As I've never been someone particularly fussy about sound quality as long as it reasonable and chances are my ears wouldn't hear the difference now anyway so that didn't come into it.

So for the time being I am sticking with CD. Good job really as I've amassed literally thousands of them now.

That said none of them currently are ZZTOP CD's so thank for this I shall listen with interest....

    1. Thanx, but I was hoping for early ZZ demos or something (if they exist, I've never been aware). You can hear hints of what was coming on a few tracks, but not much...
