There's nothing obscure or unique about any of this, and there's no complicated edits or immersivity or whatever - it's just straight mainstream pop, some massive hits. But there's an overall mood of thumping great beats and giddy optimism, and you might find it a swell soundtrack to the shit/shave/shower trifecta, or Hoovering or whatever token gestures you make toward the housework. Definitely not headphone music - turn it up until the kids complain!

To make this shining wonderfulness a part of your mean little life, simply type out a song lyric you can remember without having to think too hard or look it up. Couple lines. Here's mine:
ReplyDelete"The cops finally busted Madame Marie, for tellin' fortunes better than they do."
"She was a winner / Who became a doggie's dinner."
ReplyDelete"Looking for a girl with a washing machine"
ReplyDeleteEvery time I kiss you girl, it tastes like pork n beans.....
ReplyDeletehello dolly.

Just like the desert shows a thirsty man a green oasis where there's only sand
ReplyDeleteI met her on Sunday/it was my lucky bun day
ReplyDeleteQuit school why fake it? Brown shoes don't make it!
ReplyDelete"I used to be disgusted, now i tried to be amused"
ReplyDeletedamn autocorrect "... try to be amused"
Delete"You can spend all your time making money
ReplyDeleteYou can spend all your love making time"

Chewin' out a rhythm on my bubble gum, the sun is out and I want some
ReplyDeleteI found out the hard way, there was nothing that you wouldn't do.
ReplyDeleteEverybody said that you better watch out, I said watch out? Uh, watch out for who?

"Oh how she dances" James Luther Dickenson. ( Great in the car!)

Listening now - this is a f@@king toe tapper for sure! Excellent musical package wrapped up in 29.58 of aural delight. "Sugar pie honey bunch" all day long. Thanks for assembling and sharing!
ReplyDeleteI happened to hear The Happening the other day, and it struck me how totally impossible that mood would be to achieve or express in contemporary culture. That unironic joy is now as alien and strange as a hieroglyph. So I started hunting around in memory (the only place you can do this) for others with that pounding, ecstatic beat coupled to an uplifting lyric. I may have missed some, so if any of youse bums have suggestions for a Vol. II?
DeleteFun fact - Steve Ellis, representing the UK on its only appearance, was 16 or 17 when he sang Everlasting Love. Mac Gayden's original has been FoamFeatured© antecedently, but lacks the booming great get-up-on-yer-feet beat.
Volume 2 you say? What an excellent idea. These came to mind, in no particular order:
Delete1. Joy to the World - Three Dog Night
2. Cecilia - Simon & Garfunkel
3. Band of Gold - Freda Payne
4. I Can Hear the Grass Grow - The Move
Katrina & The Waves 'Walking On Sunshine'
DeleteJackie Wilson 'Higher & Higher'
Syndicate Of Sound 'Little Girl'
Rascals 'Good Lovin''
Kings Of Leon 'The Bucket'
Cornershop 'Brimful Of Asha (Norman Cook Mix)'
Allman Bros 'Jessica' (Is there a more joyful passage than the build up, and at about 2:28, the release of piano? Besides, of course, the next one in my list...)
Vince Guaraldi 'Linus & Lucy'
Beatles 'Birthday'
JJ Cale 'Clyde'
Dario G 'Sunchyme' (great video, too)
Pizzicato 5 'Twiggy Twiggy'
Noonday Underground 'Put You Back Together'
Bob Marley '3 Little Birds'
Camper Van Beethoven 'Take The Skinheads Bowling'
Supersuckers 'Born With A Tail' (a video sure to be enjoyed by discriminating fellers, and wait for Linda Blair to make her appearance at the end)
I picked a few from the last couple decades to show that there're joyful records made still, even if they don't have the Cali sunshine pop vibe going.

Walking On Sunshine had occurred to me, too. We'll need about fifty candidates before the panel of judges decides the final line-up. Bear in mind they should be mainstream pop, have a huge beat, and be insanely optimistic. Several choices have been ruled out already because they don't meet the rigid yet necessary criteria. I don't make the rules.
DeleteMorning Glory by Mac Gayden, is another very uplifting lyric that we need more of right now.
Delete“No more sorrow,
Ain′t gonna worry about tomorrow”.
Babs if you’re reading this, did you ever manage to create/find a vinyl rip of the first Mac Gayden album? Asking on behalf of a freeloading bum - me.
Is this not what you want?

Listening to it now ... a few tell-tale pops and clicks ...
DeleteYes I have the version from
Deletehttps://falsememoryfoam.blogspot.com/2020/02/transcendental-rnb.html
but I seem to remember Babs saying she was going to make a new vinyl rip or had a good rip - the one I have is ok, but it's such a fine album a sonic upgrade would be welcome.
Additional Volume II suggestions:
ReplyDelete1. Land of a 1000 Dances - Wilson Pickett
2. I'm a Believer - The Monkees
3. Fun, Fun, Fun - Beach Boys
4. Glad All Over - Dave Clark Five
5. I'm Into Something Good - Herman's Hermits
6. Dancing In the Street - Martha and the Vandellas
7. Give Him a Great Big Kiss - The Shangri-Las
Thames here doing most of the heavy lifting! Some swell suggestions!
DeleteFive more:
Delete1. Uptight (Everything's Alright) - Steve Wonder
2. Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In) - The 5th Dimension
3. Cherry Cherry - Neil Diamond
4. Saw Her Again Last Night - The Mamas and the Papas
5. No Particular Place to Go - Chuck Berry
Four more:
Delete1. Happy Together - The Turtles
2. Be My Baby - The Ronettes
3. Windy - The Association
4. Downtown - Petula Clark
I propose that we get rid of The Star Spangled Banner and replace it with "Do Wah Diddy" by Manfred Mann. Hard to listen to that with pumping your fist in the air. "Cool Jerk" is another one that makes me glad to be alive.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good couple of suggestions.
DeleteRoam - B52s
ReplyDeleteI Want Candy - Bow Wow Wow
ReplyDeleteeveryone of'em. All of'em. And more. Music (and my family) is about all I got right now.
ReplyDeleteCould still use a few more! Some of your suggestions were hopeful auditions for Vol Uno, but didn't quite make the cut, and I'm loth to include them on Vol Deux, making it Rockbuster to the first's Fill Your Head With Rock.
ReplyDeleteSupremes' "Up the Ladder to the Roof" maybe?
ReplyDeleteAlright, I know a lot of these lose the plot entirely but most would be on the soundtrack to the imaginary dance party at MrDave's pad with all the hip unselfconscious friends I wish I had
ReplyDeleteThe Five Du-Tones - Shake a Tail Feather
The Go-Go's - We Got The Beat
The Jackson 5 - ABC
Nena - 99 Luftballoons
Kim Wilde - Kids of America
Elton Motella - Jet Boy Jet Girl
Ramones - Do You Wanna Dance
Blondie - Denis
The Clash - Train in Vain
