You know the rules by now: set your mp3 player to shuffle, list first ten that come up! If you don't like music, list the first ten things that come into your head! If you can't count, tell us your favourite colour!
Mission Statement: to do very little, for very few, for not very long. Disappointing the easily pleased since 1819. Not as good as it used to be from Day One. History is Bunk - PT Barnum. Artificially Intelligent before it was fashionable. Fat camp for the mind! Nothing lasts, but nothing is lost. The Shock of the Old! Often bettered, never imitated. "Wenn du lange in einen Abgrund blickst, blickt der Abgrund auch in dich hinein" - Carrot Top.

HOKAYYYY!!!! Let's get the fun started, gang! WOO-HOO!!!!!

DeleteA friend of mine was a dj at a local station when War Song was released. The owner of the station was a huge Nixon supporter and banned the song. My friend had another job lined up, and on the last day on the air, he played it on repeat for over 20 minutes before they bounced him off the air. For the uninitiated, the song was written in support of George McGovern's ill fated 1972 POTUS campaign.
DeleteAt 13-14 I worked the old Gestetner machine at his Berkeley HQ and that summer and fall worked my ass off going door-to-door in BRLA for McGovern--that was a hoot, lemme tell ya--and in 1980 landed a job with him about 6 months before he lost his Senate seat. He was a wonderful fellow. He, a former professor, also wisely advised me to go back to school, clearly having figured out (correctly) I was not cut out for that kind of politics.
DeleteTrue fact (best kind), a local Klan leader who lived a few houses up our street told me he voted for McGovern "because Lincoln freed the slaves." You can't make that shit up.
Yeah. Its funny how stupidity sometimes works out for the best (but rarely does it produce that result).

ReplyDeleteThe Miss, the boy, and I decided that it was too damn hot to stick around the ol' ranch. Well, this was more the Miss's idea. I'm more of a homebody, and the boy is happy hanging out back in the canyon and getting into all sorts of adventures and such. Though he keeps coming back with these spent isotope rods. We keep telling him to leave them where he found them; nothing glowing from noon till morning can't be good for the indoors. But the boy don't listen, means well - just a tad thick around the cranium. Early last month, the Miss looked over at me during breakfast and said, "Roman Holiday," and that was it. I said to her, " We got tons of videotapes out back, but I don't think we have that one. Why don't we watch Myra Breckenridge, after all, Rex Reed is dead?" She wouldn't hear of it, said Roman Holiday again, and that was it. So here we are, in the land of pizza's that keep leanin', and some pretty rude hand gestures. But I don't let that bother me none, everybody talks with their hands at some point.. I'm even learnin' the numbers they have out here! Attached is what the ol' iPod came up with.
I) Fever - Eno and the Winkies
II) 19th Nervous Breakdown - The Rolling Stones
III) Satellite Of Love - Lou Reed
IV) Ugly Mascara - Graffiti
V) Workshop Of The Telescopes - Blue Öyster Cult
VI) The Delian Mode - Delia Derbyshire (BBC Radiophonic Music)
VII) Translucent Carriages (alternate take) - Pearls Before Swine
VIII) Nothing, Part 14 - Pink Floyd
IX) Empire / Appearance - Brian Eno
X) Magical Mystery Tour (movie mix) - The Beatles
As ever, Billy Gates of the Doubble X ranch. Ciao!
*tamps dottle from pipe into fire grate* Y'know, back in the Old Days, comments of this sterling quality were thick on the ground here on th' IoF©. Of course, we attracted a collegiate crowd back then, gentlemen for whom scholarly discourse was ever leavened by the yeast of wit. Not like the slobs we get today with their cue chalk fingers and hats pushed back.

DeleteI have a later-generation iPod, and it is the best music player I’ve had because of the software. The battery has largely gone kaput, so it only works when constantly plugged in to recharge; it lives with a Bose clock-radio that no longer plays CDs. Together, they are still useful … but they aren’t always the focus of my music listening and don’t include much of the lovely recordings I’ve discovered through blogs like this.
ReplyDeleteI had occasion to use the system today, though, while squeezing lemons. Here’s a bakers’ dozen:
Psycho Killer – Talking Heads
Here Come The Girls – Ernie K-Doe
Justice In The Streets – Richard & Linda Thompson
Morgenblätter (Op. 279, J. Strauss Jr.) – Peter Falk, Vienna Volksoper
Some Other Guy – Dave Edmunds
Running Down The Road – Arlo Guthrie
Six Point Nine – Dave and The Generators
In The Heat Of The Summer – Judy Collins
Outside Of A Small Circle Of Friends – Phil Ochs
(I’m Not Your) Stepping Stone – The Monkees
Undignified – The Love Marines
Ooh, Las Vegas – Cowboy Junkies
Dave and The Generators, and The Love Marines are both local bands from about thirty years ago, and I’m really tickled that they both showed up in my shuffle through the past!
