Homesteadin' is the long-awaited first album from Rural Free Delivery, the side project of Jesse Wayne Cord (Ethyl Dream, Grits For Breakfast, Cord-Clark). Cut on a vintage TEAC cassette recorder at his Porch Records home studio in Dead Mule Flats, OR., Homesteadin' is a major-label release from the supergroup on Piehole Records.

Jesse Wayne Cord, yesterday

"It's a reaction to the times in which we're livin' in," Cord says. "I was kind of isolated from that whole pandemic thing, battling my own demons, and RFD is a way of processing the changes I was going through." How was the supergroup assembled? "I made a few calls to a bunch of friends and they were, like, when do we start?" (laughs). "Katy and Betty-Lou McAlister were on board from day one, they bring that Appalachian vibe to the table. Brett Sweeney (Fuelie Bros, Broken Plates) hung his hat on the door and set right in. And Shep Clark (Cord-Clark, Wineblossoms) laid down his signature beat. We did everything in one take. You can hear the coyotes!" (laughs). "The songs were just everyone sittin' and pickin' on the porch, and everything, like, flowed. You can't plan for that, it just happens. It's the best thing I ever done."
Tracks: Double Time Still Single/Homesteadin'/ Back On Track/Our Broken Hearts Will Heal/Oregon And Back/Winchester Carbine/Coyote Moon/Dogs, Horses, And Grits For Breakfast/O Montana/Lord You Were On My Mind
Homesteadin' is set for release as a double vinyl 10" Record Store Day Special, followed by a TinyDesk concert. "We're really hyped," says Jesse.
You want this? Go ahead and record it. Somebody will eventually.
Review this album!! If you can't think of any words, give it a star rating out of five!
ReplyDeleteAfter some moonshine and few Sticks of Sumatran, this transcended me to another place. The sound of bed springs banging away in remote cheap motels and a scratchy jukebox that needed kicking to keep going.Yodelling and tambourines in the background as some burned out musos played on, not in tune or on the beat. The sweat was pouring off Katy and Betty as they banged away. The next morning I rolled out of the cot and the needle was stuck on the Coyote track! Full moon hot sun buy this and play it at Weddings and Funerals.*****
ReplyDeleteMood, bro!

ReplyDeleteMaybe the Cleanliness & Godliness Skiffle Band…
If I'd known you were coming I'd have baked a brownie.
DeleteIt left me speechless. And, for that, my friends and neighbors are forever grateful and big fans.

...woody
hush dog leave those coyotes alone you''ll wake the wife
The beauty of this is we all know what it sounds like, and we don't have to trouble ourselves downloading it and playing it beore making up our minds about it.
ReplyDeleteAlthough there's nothing screamingly awful about the album - it' very competently played and sung (in particular the McAlister sisters' harmonies) - there's nothing that really grabs you, either. Mostly mid-paced except for the album opener, which almost gets on its feet and rocks a little, it relies a little too much on its influences (check the Neil Youngish Coyote Moon - or should that be Harvest Moon?) it finishes up being yet another generic alt. Americana outing joining a landfill of similar releases from Piehole Records. Meh.
But, can you dance to it?!?
Deletepmac, the only thing you're going to dance to is a defibrillator.
DeleteWell when I heard the 10” RSD release was to be available I got in line at 7am at my local specialist vinyl emporium, $85.00 in my pocket. Back home I was slightly disappointed, the first two tracks had me tappin’ my foot along to the beat but they were nothin’ special, however after reading the sleeve notes I discovered that Jesse Wayne Cord was the cousin of JD Vance (star of the latest series of South Park), this got me thinking the first track on side two Back On Track - the story of a struggling dental floss salesman made good - is a cleverly disguised depiction of just how great the good old U.S.A. is again today. God bless Piehole Records, THIS IS THE BEST RECID EVER!
ReplyDeleteJamie Dwight Vincent - I borrowed Bambies computer to write this review.
This is Roberta Christgau, isn't it?
