Slight Return Dept.

Not one of Ed Caraeff's finer moments.
Beachcombing. The Isle O'Foam© is the beachcomber's paradise. If you can remember when beaches were made of sand, and not plastic bottles, fast food packaging, nitrous oxide canisters, and the bloated corpses of poisoned marine life, you'll maybe remember the lost art of beachcombing. Walking along the beach, digging your toes in, finding small treasures. Here's what I found recently - not much to look at - that cover could be just about any late 'sixties band getting back to nature and gazing with eyes unclouded by cynicism at a bright Aquarian future - but I took it back to the gold-plated Airstream H.Q., dusted it off, and was very pleasantly surprised.

First, by the fact that it's from '71, when that Aquarian dream was already dead and buried. Second, by the powerhouse rhythm section, which is a freaking joy to hear. That's the first thing I listen for these days, and if the drummer and the bass player check the boxes I look at what else there is. Plenty - weirdly catchy songs that veer between hard rock and country. Stub-your-toe time changes, tough and agile lead guitar, and great lead vocals that never descend into that throaty blues-buster caricature. This is a real keeper, and as good as those striped pants on the cover promise.

  8. I'm with you, Farq. If the rhythm section ain't got pocket, I'm gone. Lovely to see the subtly oxidized FFMFI© RV once again occupied. Let the foamy frolics proceed!

  9. I just noticed that, too. A more Golden tone to the trailer. Erm, mobile habitation unit. Bronzed from the long days of carefree, sun-drenched, beach-side living. It happens to the best of us.

Make sure you apply liberal doses of SPF* 50.

(It's about to get ten to one hundred times MORE silly here on these shores... Four long months til Mowvember...)

  12. Never heard of these guys before but consider me impressed. Should have had a bigger career. I see that Randy Reaves passed away last year.

  13. OOf, the lay-off made me a little rusty, didn't even make a "Voodoo Chile" reference.

So, uhm, welcome back, voodoo chile Farq!

    1. "...'Scuse me while I kiss this guy."

NOT ANYTHING more than JUST a JIMI "Mondegreen."

      Strange daze dept.:

Dunno if it was brought about by THIS PLACE, but, woke up this morning (and, no, NOT "...I found myself dead"...) to a dream that I was debating (with a WOMAN no less) the merits of Gene Clark vs. Chris Hillman. I was the one who used the term "bluegrass." Enough to jar me back to consciousness.

Farq's gotten in to me bean...............?

      - B.(limey!)

    2. It's Gene Clark all the way, buddy. I mean Hillman is one of the greatest second bananas in rock history, but dream logic or not, it's Geno.

.............not to have a Clark Bar, but.............

What to tell a MICHAEL ClarkE fan....................

    4. Typo time again:

(...won't be on THESE pages anytime soon...)

      "Clark Bar" WAS intentional.

"Clark BAN"... Now there's a Chestnut Mare of a different color...

(And, no, I do NOT actually "hate" ANY Byrds...)

End of diatribe. Er, mind droppings.

      (We missed you all, Farq-heads!)
