Three überswell langspielersteschallplattenalbum from the last decade that matters! I bought all these on release, and such was my disassociation from contemporary culture I was astounded when none of them turned out to be hits. Semisonic would have their MTV moment with Closing Time from their second album, but there's beaucoup songs in this three disc box set its equal. The Great Divide is the most polished in terms of playing and production, and the most varied in style, but the quality of songwriting is uniformly high across the Umajets (ex-Jellyfish) and Idle Wilds (straight outta nowhere, and straight back in again) discs.
Sultry Susanna Hoffs [above - Ed.] sez: "You won't regret downloading today's powerpoptastic deliverables!

Name one great album from the 'nineties. Not one of these, that's cheating. Think of another one.
ReplyDeleteWith These Hands by Alejandro Escovedo and if'n you don't think so, I don't want to know you.--Muzak McMusics
ReplyDeleteUpload the album fercrissakes. Geez.
DeleteOK, ok, don't have to ask me twice when it comes to the great Alejandro. --Muzak McMusics https://www.imagenetz.de/MLTMc
DeleteAlejandro, a not uncomplicated fella, is a hella songwriter & muscian
DeleteMuscians? Are they from Muscio?
DeleteIndeed they are. It's cattywampus from Muscat, but ya gotta know where to look. They are perhaps best known for their oxen, often spelled in the global north with a k.
Deletethanks! https://sintrabloguecintia.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteYour blog is just YouTube clips, with text pasted from uncredited sources, right? And no comments (at least that I saw). Try harder.
Delete... aaaand ... you have no blogger profile. I'm guessing all your page hits come from self-promoting, no content, bot comments on music blogs, like this one. Knock it off.
Deletewhat in the name of fuck are farq and the man with no name talking about? everything is going above my head and i fear there may be birds in the crowd of flying things. right now, i am listening to ella fitzgerald singing sunshine of your love. it's more awful and stupid than you can imagine. i loved ella when she was with chick webb. she wrecked everything aftyer that when she discovered she had more chops than she knew what to do with and started using them all at one time.
Deletepmac is Ella's biggest fan. Me, I never particularly enjoyed her at any stage of her career. Blander than buttermilk. Made everything sound easy and smooth, like a black Doris Day. I'll take Billie any day, any night. And if I'm in the mood for bland and smooth, I'll take Carly Simon, thank you very much. That contralto!
DeleteHer recordings with Louis are pure magic. Also, her songbook series and recordings with Joe Pass are sublime. It doesn't have to be either or with Ella and Billie.
DeleteYes, it doesn't have to be either/or, but I do the same thing with Basie and Ellington, too. The Stones and the Beatles. Sinatra and Bennett. Root beer and Coca Cola. Apples and oranges. Nailclippers and those tiny scissors on penknives. If there's a choice between similarities, I naturally go for one and exclude the other, and there's generally a reason, if I think about it.
DeleteI know that, objectively, "it's all good", but a clear understanding of one's elective affinities leads ultimately to an understanding and acceptance of selfhood, doncha think?
What's with the false dichotomies? I'll take Ella & Louis' version of "Stompin' at the Savoy," Billie's version of "God Bless the Child," the Stones about 1965-1980, The Beatles 1965-70, Sinatra until about 1960, Tony "Rags to Riches," Mexican Coke and Abita root beer, and, OK, clippers not scissors. Can't we all just along?
DeleteThere are no false dichotomies, false or otherwise. I just looked it up to make sure. Comparison of similarities (from a correctly subjective viewpoint) should be one of the basic tools in your critical apparatus. You do it yourself here, you beast! Yes, we can and should (and do, on th' IoF©) all just along.
DeleteKuschelrock 1 - 13
ReplyDeleteI don't know what this is and I'm too afraid to ask.
Deleteask discogs
DeleteDiscogs says, "German series of compilations with mainly rock and pop ballads, released since 1987. The German word "kuscheln" means "to cuddle". In the Benelux countries, the compilations were released under the name "Knuffelrock" or Rock'mantique." So the recommendation is "thirteen CDs by Various Artists."
DeleteI think my first reaction was on the money. But a little fear has left my life, for which I thank you.
DeleteIf the Germans are into "Cuddle Rock" and the Japanese are listening to "Cute Metal," I say keep an eye on Italy.
DeleteHmm .. the 90s, eh?? .. Neil Young "Mirror Ball" ..1st to pop into my head!!
ReplyDeleteJust one?
ReplyDeleteExile On Coldharbour Lane by Alabama 3, because it appealed to me and some older friends, but also a couple of younger people I knew were into it too. Still great today.
also mentions for:
Dubnobasswithmyheadman by Underworld
Emperor Tomato Ketchup by Stereolab
The Three EP’s (album) by Beta Band
Mezzanine by Massive Attack
Not forgetting veterans who made a goody as well:
Ragged Glory by NY
Back On The Black by Quincy Jones (maybe hasn’t aged too well)

ReplyDeleteAll About Eve - Touched By Jesus and/or Ultraviolet
ReplyDeleteThe Walkabouts - Setting The Woods On Fire
Richard Thompson - Rumour and Sigh
I'll leave it at that, mainly because I don't pay much attention to dates of release. I do rate All About Eve highly, mainly because Julianne Regan has a wonderful voice. Touched By Jesus is superb with both Marty Willson-Piper (The Church) and David Gilmour (Some band I've forgotten the name of) contributing guitar sounds.
Black Crowes - "Shake Your Money Maker" (1990)
ReplyDeleteOh yes good choice, did you hear Brother by Cry Of Love, they were a great band who were probably influenced by Black Crows.
DeleteNo - I am unfamiliar with Cry Of Love. I will check it out though - always good to have something to investigate. Thanks for the heads up!
DeleteAlso - Black Crowes (1992) - "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion". The Robinson brothers had it going on.

ReplyDeleteNow, moving ahead from that obvious attempt to troll about Miss Ella, I would nominate Suba's lp, Sao Paulo Confessions. Its a bossa meet the 90s mix, and belied by the fact that Suba's house stuio caught fire after he completed the recording. Suba died from the effects of smoke inhalation, shortly after he went into the inferno and retieved the tapes. Was a huge hit in Brazil and deserved a bigger auience. Released in 1998.
ReplyDeleteI am once again asking that if you have a personal fave that others might not know, then either upload an album or give us a YewChewb link so that the other 4/5g© may benefit therefrom. Because we is a bunch lazy bums what needs to have shit given us on a plate.
DeleteSuba left behind a family who are struggling. You want it- go buy it from a stream service like Bandcamp or wherever you get your physical copies. Sometimes paying for things is the better option.
DeleteYes, that's fair enough. The whole album is up on YewCheb for those who'd like to hear it before they buy it (which is one of the prime reasons for music blogs, anyway, especially those offering music at bitrates below CD quality).

DeleteI do urge you feckless ingrates to download these here long-playing record albums. Forget "powerpop" if that's putting you off, and think "upbeat guitar bands with memorable songs". And they're at the Baby Jesus Bitrate™ of @193, ensuring a broad, transparent soundstage, crisp highs, well-separated mids and warm low end!
ReplyDeletefeckless is the wordsmithing we come here for along with the music
ReplyDelete"Feckless" means not having a feck to give.
DeleteAnd yet I notice a surprising number of time's people generously give to me with hearty "feck you" to me or suggest I "feck off." I am grateful.
