There's a rumor going round that [Ed.] ain't real. That he's some kind of AI bot or algorithmic data recombobulator or sock puppet or something. He's real enough, as this Foam-O-Graph© shews [above - Ed.]. [Ed.]'s been Junior Content Editor since th' IoF© opened for bizness. He's the world's oldest intern, paid in Cheez Whiz and, when we can get it, kibble!
Every week, going forward, we'll be giving him his own platform to showcase a rekkid what he's lissnin' to. There's no censorship, no guidelines, just his own oft controversial viewpoint delivered in his own signature style!
This is sure to be a popliar and long-running FoamFeature©, and we wish [Ed.] every success with his bold new initiative! Watch out for it when it starts next week!

ReplyDeleteThe lady with the Meerschaum looks familiar but I can’t put a name to the dame. She certainly must be a lady of wealth and taste, because that looks like a classic hand carved smooth Calabash Meerschaum pipe to me, and they ain’t cheap. Have you seen her nails, they look sharp, ouch!

ReplyDelete1981 in the Madrid metro, usually Quevedo, sometimes Moncloa if the competition was stiff, I would play "Season of the Witch" for hours, randomly mixed with "Bayou Country," "For What It's Worth," and "Who Do You Love," the answer to which was a stunning French gal who'd stop and listen and otherwise not give me the time of day beyond a beatific smile, especially if I took a stab at "Bosco Stomp" or "Allons à Lafayette" in my execrable Cajun French, and some pesetas.
How did I not know it was fucking freezing in Madrid in January and February? Still cold.

I've added his double Gift From A Flower to the deliverables. Your mileage may differ, but this really is his best stuff, and in spite of him being an insufferable twat, his best is pretty damn swell. Groovy, even. A bit like Van in that you have to forgive and forget the human egregiosity and love the music for what it is - because it will never be quite like this again.

DeleteI was going to complain about the only Donovan album you need missing so many songs from Gift From A Flower To A Garden but then you detected the bad vibes I was projecting. There are still too many missing from other LPs, of course. Great stuff.
DeleteThere are none missing that would have quite fit in with the vibe of this selection - which is basically L(iquid)S(unshine)D(onovan) - and I left out Atlantis and others because of this. It's not meant to be completist, it's not the usual greatest hits or whatever. Aaaand - after "Gift", I lost enthusiasm for his work. Most of his 'seventies and later albums lack any kind of magic, and some are pretty terrible.
DeleteNo question that quality diminished rapidly on the later ones and I take your point about the concept. The Summer Day Reflection Song would fit nicely in here.
ReplyDeleteWhen he was good, he was nearly as good as he thought he was. The rest of the time, he was as bad as everyone else thought he was. But these two albums (whatever) have been my core Donovan for some time now. I've had all the others, all of them, and they've all been left out for the homeless people.
