I missed this post first time round but maybe it’s never too late to comment at FMF Island … I first discovered the deadhendrix site a couple of years ago. Revisited recently, my first post-FMF visit, and reading the sidebars this time around I recognised a familiar voice … them sidebars are funny as Farq. I’m sure you must be the author, and of the rest of the text too I guess. If so thanks for an interesting contribution to the Jimi story and a welcome re-balancing act on the Douglas debate. Great that you put these 2 albums in the context of the previous couple of releases, and in relation to what was happening in the mid-70s album world. These 2 albums the opposite Douglas extreme from Nine to The Universe, seems he had it covered both ways. So many what-ifs. So many ways things coulda developed for Jimi working with different musicians and producers and in different times etc etc. And Douglas so obviously aware of that and motivated by it. Anyway I just wanted to say that if the deadhendrix site is indeed your work, it’s appreciated by this Jimihead. I believe that I first encountered some of the deadhendrix material in an article in Ugly Things or another music magazine.
I'm in agreement with the opinion that the musical backing is appropriate and done well. I also understand the objections some have that these ultimately (and inevitably) come off as unfinished.
One might also argue that this lends the project integrity, in that manipulation has been kept to a necessary minimum as opposed to something more like a 21st century remix project.Psychfannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9098645185551495775.post-15823060847562506422019-05-20T07:21:31.950+07:002019-05-20T07:21:31.950+07:00There are a couple of "problematics" to ...There are a couple of "problematics" to these sessions, but they're nothing to do with the music that reaches your ears, unless your preconceptions get in the way. Douglas made as good and respectful a job possible on the production side, but he admitted he screwed up by giving himself writing credits for some of the material. The other is that he gave an infamous interview (Guitar, or Guitar Player, magazine) where he came off as an arrogant blowhard. Those two misjudgements negatively impacted the albums later, although they did okay at the time, getting good reviews and good sales.
If you haven't, read deadhendrix.blogspot.com for the Big Picture, and the weird subculture of Douglas-haters. And read this: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/richard-brody/postscript-alan-douglas for a glimpse into Douglas' earlier career. That's him pictured with Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus, 1960.
